The patient is Mr. HVV, 53 years old, from Trieu Son district, who came to Thanh Hoa General Hospital with symptoms of difficulty swallowing, choking, weight loss, epigastric pain, which increased in severity. After examination and paraclinical tests, the patient was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in the middle third of the chest, and surgery was indicated.
After considering the pros and cons of the treatment methods, the doctors decided to choose the method of thoracoabdominal laparoscopic surgery, esophagectomy, lymph node dissection with 3 surgical fields: neck, chest, abdomen, then esophageal reconstruction with a gastric coil, creating an esophageal-gastric anastomosis to help the patient eat and drink through the mouth without having to eat through a gastrostomy tube or jejunostomy tube.
The surgery lasted for 5 hours and was successful beyond expectations. On the 3rd day after surgery, the patient was able to sit up, practice coughing, practice breathing... On the 10th day after surgery, the patient's health was stable, he could eat porridge by mouth, no cough, no choking, no fever, good digestion, dry surgical wound, the patient was discharged from the hospital.

Dr. Le Ba Minh, Head of General Surgery Department 2, Thanh Hoa General Hospital, said: Among the methods of treating esophageal cancer, endoscopic esophagectomy is a radical and effective treatment method that helps patients reduce pain, heal surgical wounds quickly, recover health quickly, and reduce respiratory complications and cosmetic incisions. After surgery, the rate of patients recovering function is over 90%, thereby significantly improving the quality of life of patients.
Esophageal cancer is a common malignancy of the digestive tract. In Vietnam, esophageal cancer ranks 14th in terms of incidence and 9th in mortality (according to Golobocan 2020). Treatment of esophageal cancer is a multimodal treatment in which surgery plays an important role. In recent times, the implementation and mastery of the technique of esophageal resection via thoracoabdominal endoscopy and esophageal reconstruction using a gastric coil at Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital has opened up many opportunities to prolong the life of esophageal cancer patients.
