Positive Development in Vietnam-Indonesia Strategic Partnership

General Secretary and President To Lam sent his regards to Indonesian President Joko Widodo and welcomed President-elect Prabowo Subianto's visit to Vietnam, expressing his affection and respect for the Vietnam-Indonesia Strategic Partnership.

The General Secretary and President congratulated Indonesia on its 79th National Day (August 17, 1945); highly appreciated Indonesia's achievements in socio-economic development in recent times; becoming the largest economy in Southeast Asia, one of the fastest growing digital markets in the world, having many initiatives and positive contributions to peace and cooperation in the region and the world.

President-elect Prabowo Subianto thanked the warm welcome; congratulated Vietnam on its many important achievements in economic development and enhancing its position in the international arena; and shared his deep sympathy for the great losses and damages caused by Typhoon Yagi in Vietnam. The President-elect affirmed that Indonesia always attaches importance to the traditional friendship and cooperation with Vietnam - Indonesia's only Strategic Partner in ASEAN, and wishes to implement stronger measures to deepen and deepen the relationship.

The two leaders highly appreciated the positive developments in the Vietnam-Indonesia Strategic Partnership in recent times. Exchanges of delegations and contacts at high and all levels have been maintained effectively, including the State visit of President Joko Widodo to Vietnam in January 2024. Cooperation in security-defense, maritime cooperation, culture, tourism, transportation, people-to-people exchange, and local connectivity have all been focused on and effectively promoted.

In ASEAN, Indonesia is Vietnam's third largest trading partner and Vietnam is Indonesia's fourth largest trading partner. Trade between the two countries has increased nearly four times over the past 10 years.

Enterprises of the two countries are promoting investment in each other's markets in important areas such as processing and manufacturing industries, accommodation services, trade, information technology, agriculture, and industry.

The two sides discussed a number of cooperation directions to bring the bilateral relationship to a new height. The two sides agreed to further consolidate political trust through continuing to increase exchanges and contacts at high and all levels through the Party, State, National Assembly channels, people-to-people exchanges, and local connections; effectively promote bilateral mechanisms; promptly complete the development of the Action Program to implement the Strategic Partnership for the next 5 years; and coordinate in organizing practical activities to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Indonesia diplomatic relations (1955-2025).

The two sides affirmed their determination to increase bilateral trade turnover to 18 billion USD by 2028 through trade promotion activities and supporting businesses to connect with each other; removing difficulties and trade barriers to facilitate access to each other's goods markets.

The two leaders agreed to continue to encourage and facilitate businesses from both countries to invest in each other's markets, especially in new areas such as digital economy, green economy, energy transition, and electric vehicle ecosystem development. General Secretary and President To Lam affirmed that Vietnam is ready to strengthen cooperation in ensuring food security with Indonesia and asked Indonesia to facilitate Vietnamese agricultural products and Halal products to access the Indonesian market.

The two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in other important areas such as defense and security; share information and coordinate to prevent transnational crimes; continue to closely coordinate to prevent illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. General Secretary and President To Lam asked Indonesia to pay attention to and support sharing experiences and training Vietnamese officers to participate in the United Nations peacekeeping force.

Regarding regional and international issues of mutual concern, the two sides agreed to continue to coordinate and support each other at regional and international forums and organizations, especially ASEAN, the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, etc.; and promote sustainable and equitable development of sub-regions in the region.

The two leaders reaffirmed the importance of peace, stability, safety, security and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea; maintained solidarity, common stance and ASEAN's achievements on the East Sea issue; and promoted negotiations on a substantive and effective COC in accordance with international law, especially the 1982 UNCLOS.

General Secretary and President To Lam asked Indonesia to pay attention, support, and send high-ranking representatives to attend the ASEAN Future Forum 2025 and the Partnership for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 (P4G) Summit.
