Developing national products based on advanced technology

Based on technological advances, many Vietnamese national products have been born, contributing to socio-economic development in recent times.

Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Hong Thai said that since 2010, the Prime Minister has approved the "National Product Development Program to 2020".

In the initial stages of implementation, the program has formed and developed Vietnamese national products using advanced technology.

Typically, with high-quality rice products, the program has focused on researching and creating new varieties that adapt to climate change; building a package of intensive farming techniques, which reduces seed demand by 50% while still ensuring productivity, bringing in indirect revenue of 1,500 billion/year.

Mobile oil and gas drilling rig products help participating businesses reduce investment costs compared to imports by 10-15% (equivalent to about 23 million USD).

National products in the agricultural product group are all key items that contribute greatly to exports and have a large market share in domestic consumption.

Products in the industrial group (oversized and overweight lifting equipment, mobile oil and gas drilling rigs...) are all the first products manufactured in Vietnam with a high localization rate.

Medical products (vaccines) are all important products in protecting public health and can be actively produced domestically.

“These results have a widespread and positive impact on business development, contributing to improving the efficiency of science and technology activities, attracting the participation of businesses, contributing to sustainable and effective socio-economic development,” Deputy Minister Tran Hong Thai affirmed.

Based on the achieved results, on February 1, 2021, the Prime Minister signed Decision No. 157/QD-TTg promulgating the National Product Development Program to 2030 with the goal of researching and applying advanced technology and achievements of the Fourth Industrial Revolution to production and development of national products to increase productivity, quality and competitiveness.

Mr. Do Huu Hao, Head of the National Product Development Program to 2030, said that there are 8 products approved in the National Product Development Program to 2020 but not yet completed, will be transferred to the 2021-2030 period for further completion, including: Vaccines for livestock; Vietnamese ginseng; high-quality, high-yield Vietnamese rice; edible mushrooms and medicinal mushrooms; high-quality Vietnamese coffee; high-quality Vietnamese catfish and products from catfish, brackish water shrimp (tiger shrimp and white-leg shrimp) and electronic microchips.

Mr. Do Huu Hao suggested that ministries, branches, organizations and enterprises continue to propose new national products to be included in the National Product Development Program until 2030.

At the Workshop on guidelines for implementing the National Product Development Program to 2030, Mr. Tran Manh Bao, Chairman of the Board of Directors and General Director of ThaiBinh Seed Group Joint Stock Company, said that national products play an important role in building and developing the country, contributing to promoting the image of Vietnam to the world; have great significance for the agricultural sector, contributing to ensuring food security and improving people's lives.

He said that ThaiBinh Seed has participated in the national product program in the period of 2020-2021. From the implementation of tasks, the company's level of technology management and applied research has been significantly improved.

However, there are still some challenges in implementing the program such as having to cope with competitive pressure from imported products and climate change.

Mr. Bao suggested that it is necessary to speed up the implementation of the program; there should be a plan to create an open mechanism for businesses, allowing businesses that have participated before to continue developing products in the next phase.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Manh Hai, representative of Viettel Group, proposed a program to add core national products and platforms related to space, semiconductors, and new energy.
