Ma Chau silk achieves 4-star OCOP product.

In Quang Nam, there have been OCOP products developed from handicraft products, from craft villages such as Ma Chau Silk, Thanh Ha pottery, Tam Thanh fish sauce, Cua Khe...

Craft village products - still much work to do

Up to now, Quang Nam has 24 3-star OCOP products developed from handicraft products and craft villages. With 400 OCOP products, 40 crafts and craft villages (not including unrecognized craft villages), there are many sophisticated handicraft products (such as fine art wood, art pottery...), the above number is not much and there is no product ranked highly.

Besides the reason that many producers in craft villages do not participate in the OCOP program, there is another reason that if the process is properly implemented and the selection is strictly according to the criteria, OCOP products will really meet many high requirements, it is not easy to have 4-star and 5-star products. This also indirectly shows that there is still a lot of work to be done for the province's craft products and craft villages to survive, compete and develop.

Initially, OCOP products in general and products developed from occupations and craft villages have created trust and attracted consumers; especially products belonging to the food group are trusted for their quality and food safety, much better than similar products that are not OCOP products. Some products such as cinnamon incense, agarwood incense (Ha Lam), cassava noodles (Que Son), Ma Chau silk scarves, Cua Khe fish sauce, etc. have become known in many places.

However, to have an identity like when talking about Quang noodles, everyone knows that it is a specialty of Quang Nam (not Quang Ngai, Quang Binh...), grilled veal will remind people of Cau Mong, is not easy; besides being a unique delicacy, it also requires a long time to build a brand.

On the other hand, OCOP products between localities in the province and between provinces in the region overlap a lot and regional characteristics are not really clear, which is also a limitation to expanding the market and creating regional imprints in the marketplace.

Product development - focus on craft village development

Each craft village is more or less known to consumers. And if the same product is sold in many places, buyers will prioritize buying it in the craft village. Similarly, OCOP products are more trusted by consumers than similar products that are not OCOP products.

One weakness is that the craft village itself is not the subject to organize production and business but has many subjects, and the products of the craft village are not uniform to meet an order. Therefore, completing, upgrading, and developing the products of the craft village into OCOP products, the advantages of each side as mentioned above will have a mutual impact, creating double benefits to help enhance the reputation of the craft village and products.

It can be said that in the extremely difficult maintenance situation, many craft villages have actually stopped producing products and have to buy similar products from other places to sell. If there are cooperatives and enterprises (with owners of craft establishments participating in shares) to develop craft village products into OCOP products, it is an effective solution to revive and develop craft villages.

Need policy mechanism to support market promotion subjects

Mr. Le Muon, former Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Nam, said that not all products from craft villages need/should become OCOP products.

The choice of which product/craft village to choose is up to the product owner and implementing the OCOP cycle is a principle that must always be followed. The State should continue to implement incentive and support mechanisms and policies. In particular, helping OCOP owners to promote trade, including in foreign markets.

Connecting supply and demand through fairs, exhibitions, events to honor, promote and introduce unique OCOP products associated with local, regional, national and international culture as well as supporting the strong development of e-commerce...

The government also needs to strengthen management and supervision to ensure that OCOP products are evaluated and classified according to the criteria of each star level, as well as promptly detect and revoke recognition of products that do not meet the granted star level.

Promote and encourage small production and business establishments to associate and cooperate to form cooperatives/groups, contribute capital to establish joint-stock companies to improve production and business management capacity and be competitive in the market.
