Developing Phu Quoc into a coastal city

According to Decision No. 150/QD-TTg dated February 6, 2024 on approving the planning project of Phu Quoc City to 2040 of the Prime Minister, Phu Quoc City has a natural land area of ​​more than 589 km2, including 2 wards, 7 communes and areas for research on the possibility of development and construction at sea in the north and south of Phu Quoc Island.

Minister of Construction Nguyen Thanh Nghi presented the Prime Minister's decision approving the planning project of Phu Quoc City until 2040.

According to the development planning orientation of Phu Quoc City until 2040, it meets the development requirements in accordance with the planning of Kien Giang province with a vision to 2050 approved by the Prime Minister; in which, it ensures the ability to meet development needs in case of forming a special administrative-economic unit and separating Tho Chau island commune into a separate island district.

At the same time, Phu Quoc will be developed into an attractive sea-island urban area, meeting the standards of a type I urban area and a marine economic zone with a special position; a comprehensive sea-island tourism and ecological service center, with many distinct values ​​and national and international quality; a regional and international trade and service center; a regional and international high-tech health care and nursing center.

Regarding transportation planning, Phu Quoc International Airport will be upgraded and renovated, with a capacity of 10 million passengers/year by 2030; after 2030, a capacity of 18 million passengers/year. The seaport has an international passenger terminal combined with general cargo handling that can receive large-scale international passenger ships and general cargo ships up to 30,000 tons. It is forecasted that by 2040, Phu Quoc will welcome about 14.6 million visitors.

According to the People's Committee of Phu Quoc City, in 2023, Phu Quoc's total budget revenue will reach VND 7,744 billion, an increase of 34% over the estimate and 43% over the same period; the estimated budget revenue in 2024 is VND 8,900 billion. In the past 5 years, Phu Quoc City has not only been self-sufficient in budget revenue but also re-regulated for the budget of Kien Giang province.

To successfully implement the Prime Minister's planning project, Phu Quoc City pledges to do its best, coordinate with authorities at all levels to awaken potentials and advantages, unleash resources, and build a healthy investment environment; at the same time, organize the implementation of the planning to ensure scientific, rigorous implementation combined with "flexibility" in accordance with the planning at higher levels.
