Consider sea encroachment in Da Nang: Development but must be sustainable - Photo 1

The risk of losing the natural beauty of Thanh Binh Bay

According to the planning draft, the reclaimed area will occupy 90% of Thanh Binh Bay along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street. If this plan is implemented, the entire landscape of Thanh Binh Bay – a precious natural part of the city – will disappear. Not only simply changing the terrain, large-scale land reclamation can also seriously affect the marine ecosystem and natural flows.

According to Master Architect Hoang Su, former Director of the Institute of Urban and Rural Planning of Quang Nam, currently a member of the Executive Committee of the Urban Planning Association of Da Nang City, the coastal area from Lien Chieu - Nam O - Xuan Thieu - Thanh Binh lies between two large river mouths, the Han River and the Cu De River. Normally, the river mouth area would be deposited with alluvium, but in reality, this coastline has been eroded, creating the current curved bay shape. This shows that the impact of ocean currents and winds from the East Sea is very strong.

He also noted that encroaching too deeply into the sea will change the flow structure, which can cause unpredictable consequences. History has recorded major storms that have washed thousands of tons of ships onto Nguyen Tat Thanh Street. If humans have too strong an impact on nature, will nature respond?

Need a harmonious solution between development and conservation

Da Nang locations planned to be Free Trade Zones, including a sea encroachment area of more than 1,000 hectares.
Da Nang's planned locations as Free Trade Zones include an area reclaimed from the sea of more than 1,000 hectares.

Some experts suggest that if encroachment on the sea is unavoidable due to the depletion of inner-city land, the maximum scale should be limited to about 50% of the length along Nguyen Tat Thanh beach. This solution both preserves part of the natural landscape and minimizes the impact on the environment.

In addition, the city can consider exploiting the existing land fund. Master Architect Hoang Su said that the Golden Hills urban area with an area of nearly 400 hectares that is currently abandoned could be a suitable alternative. In addition, re-planning residential areas near Lien Chieu port could also free up about 1,000 hectares of land - a large and prime land fund to develop a free trade zone without excessive encroachment on the sea.

Sustainable development – responsibility to future generations

The Free Trade Zone is a sound policy, but careful study and synchronous planning are needed to ensure sustainable development. Development is not only about expanding urban space but also about preserving the city’s inherent identity and natural values.

Da Nang – a livable city – needs a balanced development strategy, so that the future can still maintain its harmonious natural beauty, instead of trading it off with long-term consequences.
