The risk of losing the natural beauty of Thanh Binh Bay.
According to the planning draft, the reclaimed land area will occupy up to 90% of Thanh Binh Bay along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street. If this plan is implemented, the entire landscape of Thanh Binh Bay – a precious natural part of the city – will disappear. Beyond simply changing the terrain, large-scale land reclamation could seriously impact the marine ecosystem and natural currents.
According to Architect Hoang Su, former Director of the Quang Nam Urban and Rural Planning Institute and currently a member of the Executive Board of the Da Nang City Urban Planning Association, the coastal area from Lien Chieu – Nam O – Xuan Thieu – Thanh Binh lies between two large river mouths, the Han River and the Cu De River. Normally, river mouth areas would be subject to alluvial deposition, but in reality, this coastline has been eroded, creating the current curved bay shape. This shows the strong impact of ocean currents and winds from the East Sea.
He also noted that excessive land reclamation would alter the structure of the river flow, potentially leading to unpredictable consequences. History has recorded instances of major storms sweeping thousands of tons of ships onto Nguyen Tat Thanh road. If humans interfere too strongly with nature, will nature retaliate?
A balanced solution between development and conservation is needed.

Some experts suggest that, if land reclamation is unavoidable due to the depletion of land in the inner city, it should be limited to a maximum of about 50% of the length of the Nguyen Tat Thanh coastline. This solution would both preserve a portion of the natural landscape and minimize environmental impact.
In addition, the city could consider utilizing existing land resources. Architect Hoang Su suggests that the nearly 400-hectare Golden Hills urban area, currently abandoned, could be a suitable alternative. Furthermore, replanning residential areas near Lien Chieu port could free up approximately 1,000 hectares of land – a large and prime location for developing a free trade zone without excessive land reclamation.
Sustainable development – responsibility towards future generations
Free trade zones are a sound initiative, but they require thorough research and comprehensive planning to ensure sustainable development. Development should not only involve expanding urban space but also preserving the city's inherent identity and natural values.
Da Nang – a livable city – needs a balanced development strategy to preserve its harmonious natural beauty in the future, instead of sacrificing it for long-term negative consequences.
