Increase income, improve life
Mr. Bui Van Hoi, a resident of Ngoi hamlet, Suoi Hoa commune, Tan Lac district, is one of the pioneers in developing cage fish farming. Previously, his family was a farmer and freelancer with an unstable income, and was considered a poor household. However, when he realized the potential of cage fish farming, he boldly borrowed capital to invest. Currently, with 30 fish cages, his family earns more than 100 million VND/year, enough to cover living expenses, raise children, and build a house worth nearly 1 billion VND by 2022.
Not only Mr. Hoi, the fish cage farming profession on Hoa Binh Lake has changed the lives of many local people. Cuong Thinh Fish Farm, with about 240 fish cages, creates jobs for more than 20 workers with an income of 8 - 12 million VND/person/month. According to Ms. Bui Thi Muon, the farm manager, the company has trained unskilled workers in fish cage farming techniques, helping them stabilize their lives and stick with the profession for a long time.
Suoi Hoa Commune, which has more than 1,000 hectares of water surface, used to raise fish on a small scale with low efficiency. However, thanks to capital and technical support policies, people have boldly invested in large-scale cage fish farming. To date, the commune has about 550 fish cages, creating jobs for hundreds of workers with an average income of 5-6 million VND/month.
Increase production scale and value
On Hoa Binh Lake, the number of fish cages has increased to nearly 5,000, with an output of about 10,000 tons/year, bringing in an estimated economic value of 600 billion VND/year. A fish cage can bring in an income of 50-70 million VND/year. Currently, there are 35 enterprises, cooperatives, cooperative groups, and family farms participating in fish cage farming, of which two enterprises apply advanced technology with a scale of more than 200 cages.
In order to promote cage fish farming, since 2014, Hoa Binh province has issued Resolution No. 12 and Decision No. 10, providing policies to support capital, technology, and encourage investment. As a result, from 2015-2022, the rate of fish cages increased by more than 115%, the average harvest increased by 40%/year, with valuable fish species such as catfish, spotted catfish, black carp, and sturgeon.
At the same time, the province also pays attention to protecting and regenerating aquatic resources. In the period of 2020-2023, the agricultural sector coordinated with other units to release over 60,000 fish fry, and in 2024, an additional 17,000 fish fry were released into the lake. In addition, propaganda classes on environmental protection and aquatic resources have been organized, helping to raise public awareness.
To increase economic value, Hoa Binh province has granted the "Da River Fish - Hoa Binh" certificate and built product consumption chains in many localities. Some fish farms have built brands and store chains in Hanoi, such as Cuong Thinh clean fish and Da River clean fish, creating trust in quality and promoting sustainable development.
With great potential from Hoa Binh Lake, cage fish farming is not only a source of livelihood for people but also a driving force for economic development, contributing to building a stable and sustainable life for communities along the lake.
However, challenges still exist. Fisheries exploitation has not been strictly managed, leading to a decline in resources and the risk of depletion of some valuable fish species such as Anh Vu, Chien, and Dam Xanh. Hoa Binh province will continue to strengthen measures to protect aquatic resources, expand high-tech fish farming models, and develop sustainable consumption markets.
