On November 12, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dak Lak province coordinated with the Dak Lak Salanganes Nest Association to organize a conference on sustainable development of the Dak Lak Salanganes Nest industry.
Attending the conference were leaders of the Department of Animal Health, Department of Livestock Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development); Vietnam Bird's Nest Association; leaders of departments, branches, localities, and units in the province; Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Khanh Hoa province; bird's nest companies and enterprises of Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa provinces.
Conference scene.
Dak Lak province has large forest resources, a highly biodiverse agricultural ecosystem and rich vegetation, creating an abundant food source for the population of swiftlets migrating from other places to reproduce and develop. Discovering the potential and advantages of the bird's nest industry, many households in the area have learned and studied the techniques of raising swiftlets from other localities for application and expansion. Up to now, Dak Lak province is one of the localities with a rapid growth rate of bird's nest farming in terms of the number of bird's nest houses and bird's nest output (over 10 tons/year). The province has been attracting investors to build production facilities, purchase, pre-process, and process products from bird's nests, aiming at the export market. With annual output and income, bird's nest farming has become a highly effective agricultural industry of the province.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dak Lak province Nguyen Van Ha spoke at the conference.
The construction of birdhouses in Dak Lak province began in 2009 and has developed strongly since 2016. The number of birdhouses in the area has increased rapidly in the past 3 years. By September 2024, 15/15 districts, towns and cities had 1,725 birdhouses. Localities with a large number of birdhouses include Ea Kar, Ea Sup, Krong Pac districts and Buon Ma Thuot city. Currently, the number of birdhouses in the province continues to increase rapidly. The birdhouses are mainly newly built by people, accounting for about 70 - 80%. According to the survey, most birdhouses currently sell raw bird's nests or process them themselves for sale. There are few establishments that deeply process bird's nest products and have not yet built a brand. Currently, in the province, there are 15 products processed from bird's nests that are classified as 3-star OCOP products, 8 products are classified as 4-star OCOP products.
Regarding the export of bird's nest products, on January 20, 2024, Thanh Dung Bird's Nest Import-Export Joint Stock Company (Krong Pac district) officially exported the first batch of bird's nest products to China. In addition, some bird's nest houses in the area have cooperated with other official export units to process and supply bird's nest products for official export to the Chinese market and some countries such as the US, Australia, Japan, etc. The export of bird's nest products is an opportunity for the province's bird's nest industry to develop, becoming one of the key industries of the agricultural sector, contributing to the development of the local socio-economy.
Signing cooperation in production and consumption of bird's nest.
In addition to the achieved results, the bird's nest farming industry in Dak Lak province is facing many difficulties and challenges in planning key farming areas, production, processing and consumption of products, quality management and brand building. The farming of bird's nests in recent times has mainly developed spontaneously. Most bird's nest farmers are still lacking and weak in farming techniques, preliminary processing, processing, installation equipment, and market information. The creation, guidance and management of the state are still limited, sometimes confused due to the lack of industry processes and standards, legal regulations and support policies. In particular, there is a lack of connection between bird's nest farming facilities and purchasing, processing, market development, and brand building to enhance value.
Based on the above situation, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dak Lak province recommends that the Central Government soon issue regulations on mechanisms, policies; standards, regulations, environment, disease prevention, and support for export activities. At the same time, it is recommended that the Provincial People's Committee develop a Project for sustainable development of the bird's nest industry. The People's Committees of districts, towns, and cities build a database of bird's nest houses and a map of the current status of bird's nest houses as a basis for applying information technology to the management and orientation of the development of bird's nest houses in the province; create all favorable conditions to ensure regulations for the deployment and implementation of mechanisms and policies to support the sustainable development of the bird's nest industry.
Reward individuals.
At the conference, units, localities and enterprises focused on discussions to comprehensively assess the current situation, potential, opportunities and challenges, discuss solutions to overcome difficulties, helping the bird's nest industry of Dak Lak province develop sustainably in the coming time.
On this occasion, Dak Lak Province's Salanganes Nest Cooperative signed a cooperation agreement in the production and consumption of salanganes nests with units including Vietnam Quoc Yen Joint Stock Company, Thanh Dung Salanganes Nest Import-Export Joint Stock Company, and Hai Yen Nha Trang Trading One Member Co., Ltd.
The Dak Lak Province Salanganes Nest Association also honored and rewarded 12 individuals who have made many contributions to the development of the province's salanganes nest industry in recent times.
