Phu Quy is an island district of Binh Thuan, with an important position in terms of economy and national defense, located on the route of communication between the mainland and Truong Sa archipelago and approaching the international maritime route, a floating base serving offshore fishing fleets.
Phu Quy has a system of fisheries infrastructure works that have received investment attention; the seaport has been upgraded and expanded; the Phu Quy fishing boat storm shelter project - phase 1 has been completed, the sea dike protection works continue to implement the remaining packages of the project of Anti-erosion embankment to protect the coast of Phu Quy island.
The local budget in the first quarter of 2023 collected VND 5,257 million, reaching 22.86% of the provincial estimate and 21.03% of the district's assigned estimate.
At the meeting, the People's Committee of Phu Quy district requested the President to pay attention and give opinions so that the Government can direct investment in anti-erosion embankments to protect the northern coast of the island. Because there has not been investment in a coastal protection embankment system, there is a risk of erosion and a great impact on a part of the population living near the coast. At the same time, it is recommended that the central ministries and branches pay attention to supporting investment in freshwater reservoir projects in Phu Quy district to preserve surface water and protect groundwater on the island.
After listening to the report, President Vo Van Thuong expressed his deep impression of the natural beauty of Phu Quy Island, with its hard-working people who overcame all difficulties to build Phu Quy Island District into the first new rural district of Binh Thuan Province.
The President acknowledged the good achievements that the Party Committee, army and people of Phu Quy district have achieved in the past time . Notably , the sovereignty of Phu Quy island has been firmly protected; political security and social order and safety on the island have been maintained. In economic development, the strength of fishing and seafood processing has been promoted, with high annual exploitation output; there have been 80 united fishing teams/530 fishing boats in the open sea. Fishermen on the island have helped each other in production and participated in protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands, which is very important and of great significance. Environmental protection, resource management, and natural disaster prevention and control have been carried out with good results. Attention has been paid to the cultural and social fields; education has all levels (from preschool to high school), and classrooms and equipment for teaching and learning have been basically ensured. Medical examination, treatment and health care for the army and people on the island have been ensured; Commune health stations meet national standards. Recently, Phu Quy district has emerged as a tourist destination that many people are interested in and love. The bond and affection between the people and the armed forces on the island is very good and close.
However , President Vo Van Thuong suggested that the district pay attention to performing well its tasks as a solid rear base, an important transit point for the Truong Sa archipelago and the DK1 platform; a floating base serving offshore fishermen and a search and rescue center at sea in the South Central region. The armed forces stationed on the island must perform well their training tasks; strictly maintain the regime of stationing and guarding on the island; be ready to fight, firmly protect the airspace, sea, security and order on the island and participate in search and rescue. At the same time, it is noted that economic development must be closely linked to ensuring national defense and security, maintaining national sovereignty, improving people's lives; and strongly promoting the potential and advantages of the district.
Focus on exploiting seafood, offshore fishing according to the cooperation and association model; increase the application of science and technology in catching, preserving and processing seafood; develop high-value seafood farming models. The President emphasized that it is necessary to develop high-tech agriculture , develop tourism into a spearhead with a suitable and sustainable scale, with diverse, rich and quality tourism types and products, showing the difference and uniqueness of the locality so that everyone who comes to Phu Quy remembers and talks to each other about the best things of Phu Quy island .
