(PLVN) - Lang Son Geopark has a majestic natural terrain, topography and geology, with about 200 caves, many beautiful waterfalls and sinkholes, containing countless interesting and attractive things. This will be a resource to fuel the development of geotourism: cave exploration, sport climbing, paragliding, trekking, waterfall crossing, sinkholes...
Discovering life hundreds of millions of years old in the sacred land
At the seminar "Developing cave exploration tourism in Lang Son Geopark" organized by the Center for Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion of Lang Son province recently held in Hanoi, Ms. Tran Thi Bich Hanh, Deputy Director of the Center for Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion of Lang Son province said that Lang Son Geopark covers an area of over 4,842 square kilometers, with a population of about 627,500 people. The Geopark covers the entire districts of Bac Son, Chi Lang, Huu Lung, Loc Binh, Van Quan, Lang Son city and part of Binh Gia and Cao Loc districts.
Lang Son Geopark has geological, geomorphological and landscape values, and is home to a rich system of paleontological fossils, showing the history of life over hundreds of millions of years, with the earliest date being 500 million years ago. There are fossils showing that Lang Son used to be a sea area. From ancient sea areas and volcanic lands, Lang Son Geopark will tell a unique story.
Lang Son Geopark has many caves, large and long, with many stalactites in many forms, most of which are preserved intact. Many interesting caves are the result of underground rivers in the past such as Tham Khoach, Lac, Doi cave and many caves containing valuable archaeological, cultural and historical relics such as Tham Khuyen - Tham Hai cave, Keo Leng cave, Gio cave, Nhi - Tam Thanh cave...
In terms of culture, the distinct value of Lang Son Geopark compared to other geoparks in Vietnam is that it is an area where many ethnic groups live together with a rich system of intangible cultural heritage, including the Mother Goddess worship. Some typical temples and pagodas include: Bac Le Temple (Huu Lung District); Chau Nam Temple, Chau Muoi Temple (Chi Lang District); Tam Thanh Pagoda (Lang Son City)...
Associated with environmentally friendly tourism
In Vietnam, geoparks with many geological, geomorphological, landscape values, along with heritage values, historical relics marking the achievements of our ancestors have great potential for development and benefit from geotourism. In recent years, the preservation and promotion of the value of geological heritages along with other heritage values has become a new trend in the world in general and in Vietnam in particular in terms of nature conservation and development to promote the development of geotourism.
On September 8, 2024, within the framework of the 8th International Conference of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network in the Asia-Pacific region, the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council meeting conducted an assessment and 100% of members agreed to recognize Lang Son Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark. According to the plan, in April 2025, UNESCO will officially add the List of Lang Son Global Geoparks to the organization's official website. It is expected that in September 2025, Lang Son province will receive the title of UNESCO Global Geopark Lang Son in Chile. In November 2025, Lang Son province will hold a ceremony to receive the title of UNESCO Global Geopark Lang Son.
In addition to creating breakthrough tourism products, attracting a large number of domestic and international tourists, contributing to promoting the province's tourism potential and strengths, the issue of preserving geoparks and protecting the environment is also very important.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Tan Van, Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources, in a limestone area, groundwater in some areas is very susceptible to pollution, while other areas are less sensitive. Therefore, to protect groundwater in limestone areas, it is necessary to plan land use in a comprehensive and comprehensive manner; it is necessary to investigate and inventory caves as a basis for management.
Dr. Mai Thi Phuong - Faculty of Tourism and Foreign Languages, Vietnam Academy of Agriculture suggested: “The application of the circular economy model to the development of adventure tourism in Lang Son Geopark brings many benefits, such as: reducing the negative impact of tourism on the environment; enhancing the experience value for visitors through sustainable activities; promoting the participation of local communities, creating jobs and increasing income; preserving and promoting the geological, ecological and cultural values of the area. However, to implement effectively, close coordination is needed between local authorities, tourism businesses, communities and environmental protection organizations”.
