(PLVN) - The community tourism model associated with traditional craft villages has become familiar and is known as a bright spot for tourism in many localities. However, in some places, this model has not really developed and only stops at the potential level.
Opportunities for traditional craft villages
On October 30, 2024, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) issued Decision No. 3222/QD-BVHTTDL approving the Project on Community Tourism Development in Vietnam with the general goal of unifying awareness, viewpoints and basically positioning the community tourism brand in Vietnam. The above decision is clear evidence that community tourism is not only a global trend but is becoming a focus in our country's sustainable tourism development strategy.
Notably, with the goal of developing community tourism products and services associated with real experiences in traditional craft villages and unique cultural values of ethnic groups. Community tourism is assessed to contribute to preserving and promoting cultural values, while diversifying local occupations, improving livelihoods for the community, especially in areas with a large number of ethnic minorities in mountainous, border, coastal and island areas.
In Bac Giang, the provincial tourism industry has continuously exploited the local tourism potential in recent years, thereby building unique and attractive Hanoi - Bac Giang cultural tours. In particular, community tourism associated with fruit growing areas, traditional craft villages and agricultural products is identified as one of the four key tourism products of the province.
A typical example is the ancient village of Tho Ha (in Van Ha commune, Viet Yen district, Bac Giang province), about 45km from the center of Hanoi. The village is considered one of the potential destinations for developing a community tourism model thanks to its rich heritage system, with many historical values and unique architectural art. In particular, the village is also famous for its traditional craft village products of making rice paper, which the locality focuses on preserving and developing. This is also a valuable resource, creating favorable conditions for the development of community tourism here.
Coming to Tho Ha ancient village, visitors will have the opportunity to directly participate in the production of grilled coconut rice paper and spring roll rice paper. At the same time, experience the unique cultural activities of the indigenous community, such as enjoying sweet Quan Ho melodies or participating in cozy community meals. These activities not only promote and preserve local traditional crafts, but also contribute to creating economic development momentum for the people, affirming the sustainable value of community tourism in particular and the tourism industry in general in Bac Giang.
Removing "bottlenecks" for development
However, despite possessing diverse resources and unique activities, the reality shows that the community tourism model in Tho Ha ancient village has not really developed strongly. This situation is still common in many traditional craft villages or ethnic minority villages in other localities when many community tourism products have not yet fully exploited their potential and available strengths.
Explaining the above situation, many experts believe that the main cause comes from the local people themselves. The community tourism model requires the participation of the whole community, but despite being trained, oriented and supported by all levels, sectors and local authorities, people in many places are still quite vague about how to implement tourism activities. Of course, if the nature and implementation process are not clearly understood, tourism development will encounter many difficulties.
Sharing with Vietnam Law Newspaper, Dr. Tran Thi Ngan Giang - Vice Principal, Head of Tourism Department, Dai Viet College said that although many localities have great potential to develop community tourism models, the fact that craft villages and local communities do not know how to do tourism has led to this model not achieving the expected development. In addition, factors such as unconnected and incomplete infrastructure, accommodation facilities and tourism services that do not meet the needs, ineffective tourism brand promotion strategies, along with lack of professional human resources are all factors that hinder the maximum exploitation of community tourism potential.
Therefore, in order to develop community tourism associated with traditional craft villages and unique cultural values of ethnic groups, while also bringing benefits to people's lives, it is necessary to have the attention and support from the State, in order to promote and mobilize households to participate in the community tourism model. Next, it is necessary to improve the capacity and expertise of local people participating in tourism activities, including support and professional training so that they can organize, manage and exploit destinations effectively.
Only when overcoming the shortcomings and limitations, finding the right direction and method, can community tourism contribute to promoting socio-economic development, creating jobs and improving the material and spiritual life of people, especially in areas with large ethnic minorities in mountainous, border, coastal and island areas.
