Marine farming still has a lot of room.
A report from the Department of Fisheries (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) shows that in 2022, our country's marine farming area will reach more than 256,000 hectares, with an output of nearly 750,000 tons; in 2023, the output could reach nearly 800,000 tons.
Vietnam's sea area is over 1 million km2, while the marine farming area only accounts for about 20% of the total aquaculture area of the country. Marine farming still has a lot of room for development, but up to now, due to many subjective and objective reasons, marine farming has not fully exploited its potential and inherent natural advantages.
Regarding the development of breeds and feed for marine aquaculture, Mr. Tran Cong Khoi, Head of the Department of Breeds and Aquatic Feed, Department of Fisheries, said that the mollusk farming area is the largest with 57,000 hectares, 1 million m3 of cages, and an output of 480,000 tons.
Regarding marine aquaculture, there are 764 facilities producing marine feed, of which more than 100 facilities produce mixed feed, accounting for more than 20%. The total output of mixed feed is about 35,000 tons while fresh feed is about 46,000 tons. Lobster larvae are heavily dependent on imported shrimp from Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Singapore.
There are still many difficulties and challenges.
Although there is still room, the marine aquaculture industry still faces many difficulties and challenges, especially in developing industrial marine aquaculture such as: Poor planning and implementation of marine aquaculture planning; spontaneous aquaculture activities, breaking the planning are still common, leading to environmental pollution; difficult product consumption, difficult to develop synchronously. Technology for seed production, health and environmental management in farming areas; disease prevention and treatment in farming objects are still limited; infrastructure for industrial marine aquaculture; development of supporting industries; harvesting and transportation technology; processing technology and market development...
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that this is a field with a lot of potential in Vietnam with a sea surface area of over 1 million km2. Currently, marine aquaculture has formed a number of industrial farming areas, however, marine aquaculture still shows a series of limitations and shortcomings such as: Lack of initiative in seed, poor quality of seed, unknown origin.
Regarding food, still using crabs and fish is one of the causes of environmental pollution. In addition, the farming scale is still small, fragmented, without a master plan, which creates difficulties for sea surface, harvesting, and processing, and does not create great added value. Therefore, it is necessary to shift from traditional aquaculture and exploitation thinking to industrial methods, applying high science and technology, contributing to protecting the marine environment, focusing on processing, expanding the market, in order to promote sustainable development of marine farming in our country...
Need to develop multi-purpose on the same water surface area
Mr. Tran Dinh Luan - Director of the Department of Fisheries said that to develop marine aquaculture, it is necessary to develop multiple purposes on the same water surface area, in addition to strengthening the handling and punishment of violations in water exploitation and use and building more effective cooperation models.
"Regarding the need to use sea surface for aquaculture, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has sent a document to the chairmen of the provincial People's Committees. In that planning, there needs to be space for aquaculture, especially marine aquaculture. Currently, many places have the mindset of developing tourism but not developing aquaculture. So we have a piece of land but can only do one thing while we can do many things and promote good economic efficiency" - Mr. Luan said.
In addition, the Director of the Department of Fisheries said that the sea surface must be planned, and farming households must be registered and assigned appropriate coordinates: "Cage density must follow regulations and standards that have been guided. Local authorities and farming facilities must also work together because issuing a registration form is easy but it is impossible to do it at the local level."
On November 25, in Nha Trang City, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with the People's Committee of Khanh Hoa Province and the Vietnam Agriculture Newspaper to organize a conference on the current status of supply of seeds, feed, and materials for marine aquaculture; traceability of product origin and solutions for sustainable development of marine aquaculture in Vietnam.
Attending the conference were Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien, leaders of Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, representatives of units under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development; ministries, branches, localities; industry associations, international organizations; businesses, and aquaculture households.
