The close connection between the State – Scientists – Enterprises – Farmers is the key to sustainable agriculture. The State plays the role of guiding and supporting policies; enterprises are encouraged to invest in agriculture, play the role of leading the market and consuming products; scientists provide knowledge and technology and farmers are the center of production.
Over the years, Son La Sugarcane Joint Stock Company has become one of the typical enterprises in supporting and closely linking with farmers in developing sugarcane material areas. Currently, the Company has cooperated with more than 12,000 farming households in the districts of Mai Son, Yen Chau, Bac Yen and Son La city, with a total area of about 9,699 hectares, an average yield of 65 tons/ha, and an estimated sugarcane output of 606,000 tons/year.
Mr. Tran Ngoc Hieu, General Director of Son La Sugarcane Joint Stock Company, said: To support farmers, the Company has invested an average of 150 billion VND/year in developing raw material areas, advanced about 70 billion VND in advance from sugarcane sales and supported sugarcane growers from 30 to 45 billion VND/year. In addition, the Company also provides seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides on a post-payment basis, helping farmers reduce difficulties in initial investment costs; focusing on improving farmers' technical skills through organizing training courses and technical seminars.
Chieng Sung Agricultural Joint Stock Company also implemented a joint production of corn seeds with 350-400 farming households in Chieng Sung commune, Mai Son district and Muong Chum commune, Muong La district on the principle of mutual benefit. In 2025, the Company will continue to cooperate with Vietnam Seed Group Joint Stock Company and the Corn Research Institute to produce 4 types of corn seeds including the corn varieties: LVN10, CS71, NSC9 glutinous corn and HN92 glutinous corn with a total area of about 400 hectares, with an expected output of 1,200 tons.
Mr. Duong Van Can, Director of the company, said: Every year, at the beginning of the production season, the company signs contracts with farmers. The company commits that farmers participating in corn seed production with the company will have higher income than other crops in the area and according to the motto "Harmonious benefits, shared risks". During the production process, farmers are supported by the company with technical support, advance fertilizer materials; support for flag withdrawal, pesticides, transportation and classification of corn seeds when they arrive at the processing factory. Therefore, farmers are very secure when participating in corn seed production linkage with the company.
The linkage model between enterprises and farmers in Son La province is increasingly effective, contributing significantly to the development of sustainable agriculture. Through cooperatives, farmers are guided on farming techniques according to VietGAP standards, are granted growing area codes, and are linked to product consumption with domestic and foreign enterprises. Enterprises play a role in consuming products, providing input materials and supporting the building of agricultural product brands. Typical models, such as: Linking mango production in Thuan Chau, longan and safe vegetables in Moc Chau, Mai Son, Song Ma or red-fleshed dragon fruit for export in Thuan Chau have helped farmers increase their income, stabilize output, and gradually participate in the international agricultural value chain.
Support farmers
Increasing capital support through the Farmers Support Fund (FSF) is increasingly showing its role as one of the key pillars to help Son La farmers develop production and business sustainably and effectively. Up to now, the total source of the FSF in the province has reached over 78.5 billion VND. In particular, with 23 projects implemented across the province, more than 200 farming households have accessed preferential capital with a total amount of over 8.5 billion VND, focusing on strengths such as fruit tree planting, livestock farming, aquaculture development and rural industries. This is not only financial support, but also a lever to create conditions for farmers to shift the structure of crops and livestock, invest in production towards commodities and linked to the value chain.
In 2023, in Trung Tam village, Chieng Den commune, Son La city, farmers' associations have joined together to establish a professional farmers' association specializing in raising biological pigs. Ms. Tong Thi Xien, Head of Trung Tam village's professional farmers' association, said: Thanks to access to loans from the Farmers' Support Fund, many members of the association have been able to expand the scale of black pig farming in the direction of biological safety, investing in barns, breeding pigs and animal feed. From 27 initial members with 134 breeding pigs, the model has now grown to nearly 2,000 breeding pigs, creating a stable income for members and recruiting 14 new members. Many households after investing have had a good income, improved their lives and gradually escaped poverty sustainably.
Farmers' associations at all levels actively coordinate with specialized departments and agencies to organize many vocational training courses, technical training and production consulting for farmer members. Training content focuses on practical areas such as fruit tree cultivation techniques, animal husbandry in the direction of biological safety, reasonable use of fertilizers and pesticides, application of VietGAP and organic processes, etc.
Thanks to systematic training programs, farmers have not only improved their production skills, but also changed their mindset from traditional farming to commodity production, knowing how to calculate economic efficiency and apply science and technology to increase productivity and product quality. In addition, many households have boldly invested in water-saving irrigation systems, greenhouses, and applied digital technology in product traceability and consumption, contributing to improving production efficiency, reducing input costs and increasing the competitiveness of agricultural products.
Accordingly, the movement "Farmers compete in production and good business" has become one of the strong driving forces to promote household economic development, improve income and living standards for Son La farmers. Up to now, the movement has attracted more than 28,000 farmer households to participate, becoming the core force in developing agricultural commodity production. Not only stopping at developing household economy, more than 12,000 rural workers have regular jobs from these economic models, creating a wide spread in the community. In particular, every year, more than 1,000 households have risen out of poverty thanks to the application of technical advances, taking advantage of loans and effective market linkages.
Mr. Vu Duc Thuan, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Son La province, said: To support farmers in effective production, the Farmers' Association of the province continues to promote propaganda and dissemination of the Party's guidelines and the State's policies on agricultural and rural development, helping farmers raise awareness and proactively access opportunities. The Association organizes training courses, transfers scientific and technical advances, and guides farmers in applying safe and sustainable production processes to improve the quality and value of agricultural products. The Association also plays a good connecting role to create conditions for people to access preferential loans, agricultural insurance and stable consumption markets. Building and consolidating cooperatives and cooperatives contributes to the formation of effective production and consumption chains.
Son La Farmers’ Association has been affirming its important position in the process of supporting members to develop production in a stable and sustainable manner. Through practical and effective activities, farmers’ associations at all levels in the province are a solid foundation for farmers to confidently invest in economic development, contributing to the construction of new rural areas and sustainable agricultural development in the new period.
