Promoting the value of traditional craft villages.

Việt NamViệt Nam20/03/2025

Currently, Thai Nguyen province has 277 recognized craft villages and traditional craft villages. These villages not only contribute to honoring distinctive and traditional products, but also provide employment and stable income for many rural workers.

Safe tea production practices are being implemented in most tea-producing villages in the province.
Safe tea production practices are being implemented in most tea-producing villages in the province.

Thai Nguyen currently has 184 tea-making villages, with a few remaining being handicraft villages and flower-growing villages (an increase of 25 traditional craft villages compared to 2020). Notably, some craft villages in the province are 50, 60, or even nearly 100 years old, and the people remain dedicated to their craft.

According to Mr. Nguyen Duy Hung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Khe Mo commune (Dong Hy district), the most fundamental reason for people's attachment to the craft village is its ability to create jobs and stable income. In particular, through the craft village, people can connect and learn from each other's production experiences…

As Mr. Hung shared, traditional craft villages are increasingly demonstrating their value. For example, the Tien Phong traditional tea village in Khe Mo commune is 60 years old. Starting with only 24 households, this village now has nearly 150 households, and 100% of them are involved in tea production. The household with the most tea plantations has nearly 2 acres, while the smallest has over 5 acres. Tea production provides employment and stable income for at least 250 to 400 people in the area, leading to a comfortable life (on average, 1 acre of tea plantation yields an income of around 20 million VND per year).

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam, one of the outstanding tea-producing households in the traditional craft village, shared: "Having been involved with tea cultivation for over 30 years, and having gone through ups and downs when product prices dropped, I am very happy to see the Tien Phong traditional tea craft village developing more and more. What I and many other households appreciate most is that since being recognized as a traditional craft village (more than 16 years ago), connecting and learning production and processing experiences from households in Tien Phong as well as with famous tea craft villages in Tan Cuong (Thai Nguyen City), Trai Cai (Dong Hy)... has helped to improve the quality of our products and increase their selling prices."

Besides connecting and sharing experiences in production and processing, and participating in the activities of craft villages, people also gain knowledge about production management. Ms. Tong Thi Xuyen, Head of the Management Board of the Trung Thanh 2 Tea Craft Village, Vo Tranh commune (Phu Luong district), said: "People in the craft village all keep a logbook recording their production activities. Thanks to this, they can manage the input and output of their products to ensure safe processes, appropriate prices, and profitability when selling to the market, thus improving their living standards."

In reality, craft villages and traditional craft villages in Thai Nguyen are effectively promoting their unique values. In particular, they encourage and motivate artisans to improve their skills and pass them on to future generations; enhance the effectiveness of state management of rural industries, and contribute to the implementation of the National Target Program for building new rural areas…

Nevertheless, the province's craft villages and traditional craft villages are still facing many difficulties such as: products lacking competitiveness and unstable markets. People in these villages still have to fend for themselves to find outlets for their products. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam said: "My family has to proactively find outlets for our products, even through social media platforms and referrals from business partners..."

Therefore, in addition to organizing competitions to bring together artisans to share best practices in production and improve product quality, it is essential for the province to focus on developing craft villages in conjunction with tourism and ecotourism. This will not only promote the sustainable value of craft villages but also address the issue of rural people leaving their hometowns to work elsewhere.
