The Thac Hai archaeological site in village 6, Ia Jloi commune, Ea Sup district, Dak Lak province, was discovered in early 2020. Dak Lak Museum coordinated with the National Museum of History to excavate twice in 2021 and 2022. Thereby, many valuable and unique relics and artifacts were collected, found for the first time in the Central Highlands; including the "Thac Hai Stone Drill Collection" which was recognized as a National Treasure since 2023.
Overall analysis shows that the Thac Hai relic dates back about 4,000 - 2,000 years ago, and existed for more than 1,000 years, from the Late Neolithic period to the Iron Age. This is a complex relic, which is both a residential area, a burial site, and a large-scale drill bit manufacturing workshop.
During the third excavation, carried out from the end of June to the end of July this year, in just one excavation pit of about 20 square meters, nearly 1,400 artifacts were collected, including grinding tables, stone pots, grinding stones, grinding tables, axes, adzes, chisels, many broken pieces of tools, stone knives, drill bits, etc. In particular, for the first time, spinning rods, many pieces of unfinished and finished jewelry, and broken pieces were found, suggesting the possibility of stone jewelry production activities here.
“This third excavation has two new discoveries, which are the drill bits and the beads. This new discovery once again affirms that the Thac Hai drill bit collection and the newly discovered relics demonstrate a very rich and prosperous life and civilization that has existed for a long time in this land,” said Mr. Lai Duc Dai, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dak Lak.
