The study, led by scientists at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health (USA), in collaboration with the University of Oxford (UK), aimed to find out how the intensity and duration of physical activity affect the risk of cancer.
Researchers tracked data from more than 85,000 participants, with an average age of 63, from the UK Biobank.

Participants wore activity trackers that tracked their daily steps and activity levels.
The authors looked at the association between average daily activity levels and the incidence of 13 types of cancer, including breast and colon cancer.
Being active reduces cancer risk by 26%
After an average follow-up of 5.8 years, 2,633 people developed one of 13 types of cancer.
The results found that the most active people had a 26% lower risk of cancer than the least active people, according to science news site ScitechDaily.
The authors also found that replacing daily sedentary time with light and moderate to vigorous physical activity actually reduced cancer risk. Both housework and walking were associated with reduced cancer risk.
Researchers suggest sedentary people could reduce their cancer risk by walking more at any pace.

Walking 9,000 steps a day is best for reducing cancer risk
In particular, researchers have found that walking a lot significantly reduces the risk of cancer, regardless of the intensity of the steps.
Specifically, walking 7,000 steps a day reduces the risk of cancer by 11%. Notably, walking 9,000 steps a day is the best for reducing cancer risk, with a reduction of up to 16%. Beyond this threshold, the effect does not increase further, according to ScitechDaily.
What was different about the results was that walking speed did not affect cancer risk. That is, as long as you walked a lot, walking fast or slow significantly reduced your cancer risk. This suggests that the number of steps you take each day may be more important than the intensity of your activity in reducing your cancer risk.
Researchers recommend that sedentary people can reduce their cancer risk by incorporating more walking, at any pace, into their daily routine.
