Do you have high cholesterol due to genetics? Scientists say try this popular supplement.

Research recently published in the biomedical journal The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that omega-3 fish oil may help people with genetically high cholesterol by reducing levels of bad cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides, offering a potential strategy for reducing cardiovascular disease .

High cholesterol hardens arteries, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

While a healthy diet and exercise can help prevent high cholesterol, there is one factor that cannot be controlled – genetics. For people with a family history of high cholesterol, this finding provides an additional measure to protect their health.

Scientists from the University of Georgia (USA) used genetic data from more than 441,000 participants and calculated scores to predict the genetic risk of having high total cholesterol, high bad cholesterol, as well as triglyceride and good cholesterol levels.

Recent advances in genetic studies have allowed us to predict a person's genetic risk for high cholesterol, explains Dr Yitang Sun, from the Department of Genetics at the University of Georgia.

Results found that those taking fish oil supplements had lower cholesterol levels than expected, especially total cholesterol, bad cholesterol, and triglycerides.

Taking fish oil helps improve blood fat levels

The new findings suggest that fish oil supplements may help people with genetic high cholesterol, said study author Kaixiong Ye, PhD, an associate professor of genetics at the University of Georgia. High cholesterol hardens arteries, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Taking fish oil improves cholesterol levels, says Dr. Ye. Notably, researchers have also found that the supplement increases good cholesterol levels, according to Scitech Daily .

There are no set recommendations for fish oil intake, but there are recommendations for total omega-3 intake, including EPA and DHA.

Typically, 1,000 mg of fish oil provides about 300 mg of EPA and DHA combined. The daily recommendation for total omega-3s is 1,100 mg for women and 1,600 mg for men.

As such, healthy adults can consume up to 3,000 mg of fish oil per day, according to Healthline .
