Discover the miracle of green tea drinking habit in the elderly

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên17/01/2025

As one of the world's most popular beverages, green tea is known for its many health benefits. Many older people, in particular, have the habit of sipping tea every day.

Now, new research published in the scientific journal npj Science of Food , has uncovered the magic of this healthy habit.

To evaluate the effects of green tea consumption on white matter lesion volume, hippocampal volume, and total brain volume using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, scientists from Kanazawa Graduate School of Medicine (Japan) led a large-scale study called "Green Tea Consumption and Brain White Matter Lesions in Non-Demented Elderly People," involving eight research centers in Japan.

As one of the world's most popular beverages, green tea is known for its many health benefits.

White matter lesions in the brain, often indicative of small vessel disease, lead to cognitive decline, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Data was collected between 2016 and 2018, including dietary assessments, MRI scans, and cognitive assessments of 8,766 participants aged 65 and older. Participants did not have mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia at the start of the study.

They were asked to respond to food frequency used to measure daily green tea consumption, which was categorized into four levels:

  • 200 ml or less
  • From 201 - 400 ml
  • From 401 - 600 ml
  • From 601 ml and up.

The authors performed brain MRI to measure white matter lesion volume, hippocampal volume, and total brain volume.

Drinking 3 or more cups of green tea per day (601 ml or more) reduces white matter damage in the brain, helping to protect the brain in older adults.

Green Tea Research Results and the Unexpected Health Benefits of This Drink

Results found that higher green tea consumption significantly reduced white matter damage.

Specifically, drinking 3 or more cups of green tea per day (601 ml or more) reduces white matter damage in the brain, helping to protect the brain in older adults, compared to drinking 1 cup or less (200 ml or less), according to the medical news site Medical Express.

And the more green tea you drink, the greater the reduction.

Findings suggest that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of green tea catechins, such as epigallocatechin gallate, may reduce blood vessel damage and promote brain health.
