Scientists on the submersible OceanX were so amazed by what they saw, they were making history.

Deep-sea footage shot on a GoPro dropped several meters below the ocean floor is enough to make many people shudder. But what was found in this viral video is even more groundbreaking, and for some, a lot more bizarre.

The video, posted to OceanX's YouTube channel, is just over 90 seconds long, but what the explorers captured is truly breathtaking. In the video description, the company says it partnered with the Cape Eleuthera Institute to become the first submersible to tag an animal. "Our target is the deep-sea shark, the sixgill shark" company explained. "This ancient species predated most dinosaurs and was the dominant predator in deep-sea ecosystems."

Dr. Dean Grubbs of the FSU Marine Laboratory was the lead scientist on the mission, and it was successful. Grubbs led the team that became the first to attach satellite tags to the elusive sharks on the seafloor. Previously, scientists could only do this by bringing them to the surface.

The team did this on the seabed, and the footage also shows how shocked the men on the submersible were. Spotting the shark swimming around, one of them exclaimed: "Oh, wow!" "Look at its size!"

Trying to get the shark into a good position to tag it, they hesitated as it lay prone, waiting for it to come closer. Which it did, pressing its nose against the side of the sub, looking up at the curious scientists, even appearing to roll its eyes as it swam away.

Scientists were also surprised by the size of the animal. Its species typically grows to 20 feet (about 6 meters) long, but it’s rare for anyone to get up close to one before. It predates most dinosaurs, meaning it roamed the seas for tens of millions of years.

Viewers were equally as surprised in the comments section. One user said: "If it weren't for its size, this shark's eyes alone would give me a heart attack." Another commented: "That close-up of the eye is amazing."
