According to information from the People's Committee of Trieu Son district, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has just decided to fine more than 3 billion VND to Nam Viet Chromite Joint Stock Company (Chromite Company) for environmental violations.
Specifically, Chromite Company discharged dust and exhaust gas exceeding technical standards on waste from 1.1 times to less than 1.5 times in the case of exhaust gas flow from 65,000 m3/hour to less than 70,000 m3/hour.
For this violation, the company was fined VND850 million and had its source of polluting waste suspended until the end of January 2024.
In addition, the company also built and installed equipment, pipes, and other discharge lines to discharge untreated waste into the environment. For this violation, the company was fined VND900 million; its wastewater discharge license was revoked until the end of January 2024.
The authorities also discovered that Chromite Company discharged wastewater containing parameters that were hazardous to the environment, exceeding the technical standards for waste by 5 times or more. For this violation, the company was fined 270 million VND and the additional penalty was over 1 billion VND.
According to local residents, since the beginning of the year, the factory has been producing and burning chemicals day and night, and the stench is unbearable. Previously, in May 2022, VietNamNet newspaper reported: "The ore smelting plant emits smoke that smells like pesticides, making people nauseous when inhaling it."
