Previously, on January 17, the French Senate passed a resolution supporting Armenia's territorial integrity and calling for sanctions against Azerbaijan over its military operations in Karabakh in September 2023.

AzerNews reported that Azerbaijani parliamentarians considered the French Senate's resolution "biased, one-sided and baseless."

“Due to the anti-Azerbaijani policy pursued by the French government, including resolutions passed by both houses of the French parliament against our country, relations between our countries are at an all-time low and can essentially be considered suspended,” the committee said in a statement.

Accordingly, this agency calls for freezing all assets of French officials if they are included in the list, expelling all French companies and preventing these companies from participating in any projects carried out under the direction of the State.

The document also stressed that “the steps taken by the government as well as the French Senate and National Assembly are aimed at preventing the implementation of the peace agenda between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as the escalation of tensions in the South Caucasus region.”

Azerbaijan also accused Paris of trying to prevent the signing of a peace treaty between Baku and Yerevan.

France has not yet commented on the move by the Azerbaijani Parliament's Committee on International Relations and Inter-Parliamentary Relations.

Relations between France and Azerbaijan have been strained since mid-September 2023 after Baku accused Paris of showing a “biased” stance and providing political and military support to Armenia. Armenia and Azerbaijan are both involved in a territorial dispute with Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

In late December 2023, Azerbaijan expelled two French embassy staff for activities deemed incompatible with their diplomatic status. Paris immediately responded in kind, asking two Azerbaijani diplomats to leave France.
