(Dan Tri) - Many Southeast Asian fans expressed their joy at the news that the Vietnamese and Thai teams will compete against each other in the final of the AFF Cup 2024 on January 2 and January 5, 2025.
"As everyone expected, Thailand and the Vietnamese team will meet in the final of the AFF Cup 2024. Both are classy teams.
The two upcoming finals are both worth watching," Lucky Luke from Malaysia commented on Asean Football after witnessing Thailand come from behind to defeat the Philippines with a total score of 4-3 after two legs of the 2024 AFF Cup semi-final, thereby winning the right to play in the final against Vietnam.
In the first leg of the semi-final at the Philippines' home ground, the Thai team surprisingly lost 1-2. In the second leg of the semi-final at their home ground on the evening of December 30, the Thai team showed their strength when they took a 2-goal lead after goals from Peeradon Chamratsamee (minute 37) and Patrick Gustavsson (minute 54).
However, a surprise happened in the 84th minute when substitute striker Kristensen scored to shorten the score to 1-2, forcing the match to go into extra time afterwards.
Extra time saw both teams play cautiously, but when everyone thought that both teams would have to settle the score in a penalty shootout, substitute striker Suphanat Mueanta headed the ball past goalkeeper Kammeraad to bring home a 3-1 victory, thereby winning the final with a total score of 4-3 after two legs of the semi-final.
This victory helped the Thai team dramatically overcome the Philippines to gain the right to play in the final round with the Vietnamese team (to take place at 8:00 p.m. on January 2 and January 5, 2025).
"So much drama in all the semi-finals so far. The last two matches will be a clash between the two strongest teams in Southeast Asia: Vietnam and Thailand. It's worth waiting to see.
"For the Philippines, you guys gave it your all as Thailand needed extra time to beat you. Great performance," Lucky Luke added.
"So proud of our boys. Not our time yet but this is the best semi-final for the Philippines. See you all in the Asian Cup Qualifiers!", Philippines' Jayson J. Serna expressed regret after stopping in the AFF Cup semi-finals.
"No tears. No shame. No excuses. Just head held high with pride. Thank you boys! We are so proud of you!" added Philippines' Ralph Alicante.
"Anyway, Thailand and Vietnam meeting in the final round is still the most worth watching, as both are the truly strong teams in Southeast Asia at the moment.
I believe that the Vietnamese team has a better chance of winning the championship, because they have many experienced players, not to mention a naturalized striker of Brazilian origin. He is a killer on the attack line, the Thai team needs to think of a way to stop him," said Thai account Krongkai Chaichot.
"I'm also Thai, but watching Thailand play against the Philippines, I think the Vietnamese team is sure to win the championship. Anyway, good luck to both teams," commented Sua Wai.
"Congratulations to Thailand for defeating the Philippines to meet Vietnam in the AFF Cup final for the second consecutive time," shared Malaysian account Ejat Zamejat.
"Please give the cup back to Vietnam. Our players are probably exhausted," Thai account Nopharat Tom Chalatkham expressed concern.
