The software, called Teachme AI, was invented by Tokyo-based Studist Corporation and is capable of producing video footage accompanied by text translated into 20 different languages, from Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian to Bengali.
The software is seen as an effective solution to ease the burden on Japanese companies in creating instructional videos for foreign workers, in the context of the country's serious labor shortage and aging population.
Teachme AI can create instructional videos from raw footage in a fraction of the time. It can cut editing time by more than 90%, with footage automatically divided into chapters with subtitles and text explanations. This makes it easy for foreign workers to grasp the sequence of tasks to be performed.
“These videos are very useful in helping workers learn the basics of the job,” said Satoshi Suzuki, president of Studist. The number of foreign workers in Japan exceeded 2 million for the first time as of the end of October 2023, according to government data.
During a demonstration trial of the AI software at a butcher shop in Ageo, Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, a 30-minute video showing how to package meat with explanations in Thai was made in about 15 minutes.
"I was surprised at how quickly the instructions were compiled," said Yumi Eguchi, CEO of Sc Meat.
"Thanks to the Thai subtitles, I easily understood what needed to be done," said Wandee Sriprom, a 42-year-old worker from Thailand who performed the work in the video.
