On April 21st, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences officially approved the use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. This is the organization behind the Oscars.

"Artificial intelligence and other digital tools were used in the filmmaking process. These software programs do not support or hinder the possibility of nomination," the organization stated. However, they still highly value creative works that are largely made by humans.

The Academy and its branches will judge “the extent to which humans play a central role in the creative process when selecting films to award prizes.” Ultimately, the final product remains the most important factor.

Hollywood has long used AI. For example, many filmmakers use Axle AI for facial recognition, scene detection, and transcript creation. Strada AI assists with file organization and remote editing. Action scenes in Alex Garland's *The End of the Empire* also used DJI's AI for focus locking.

AI solutions often don't directly contribute to the creation of core content, such as background images or voiceovers. For example, Twelve Labs provides scene recognition, while Luma AI assists in 3D scene rendering.

However, there is currently much controversy surrounding the use of AI in filmmaking. The Brutalist , an epic film about immigrants that was nominated for 10 Oscars, is alleged to have used this technology to highlight the Hungarian accent.

Several other nominated films, including Emilia Pérez and Dune : Part Two , also used AI software to enhance effects. Filmmakers used AI Runaway in the blockbuster Everything Everywhere All at Once .

Meanwhile, James Cameron, director of Titanic and Avatar , has joined the board of directors of the startup Stability AI.

In 2024, Hollywood faced a wave of protests led by the SAG-AFTRA union, fighting for fair rights regarding artists' images and voices in the age of AI. An agreement was signed late last year to ensure artists receive fair compensation.

Powerful chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini can now write movie scripts. Google Image and MidJourney create images with a single command. Additionally, tools like OpenAI's Sora and Google's Veo have produced realistic, cinematic video clips.

According to Digitaltrends , AI-generated videos mean that one or more real artists could lose their jobs. The same applies to voice actors and dubbing professionals.

The backlash against AI remains quite intense. Marvel was heavily criticized for using AI-generated imagery in the opening sequence of the Secret Invasion series. Meanwhile, actress Demi Moore, nominated for her role in The Substance , had to remove an image of her dog created using AI.

"I didn't realize that sharing this image would be so disrespectful to artists and creators around the world ," she wrote in the alternative post.
