Ukrainian President Volodymyr spoke out after his country was excluded from the US-Russia dialogue in Saudi Arabia, even though the talks focused on resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
President Zelensky at a press conference in Ankara, Türkiye, on February 18.
Speaking during a visit to Türkiye, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the US-Russia dialogue on the conflict in Ukraine, which did not include Ukraine.
According to him, any negotiations aimed at ending the hostilities in Ukraine must be "fair" and involve European countries, including Türkiye.
"Ukraine, Europe in the broader sense – and including the European Union (EU), Turkey and the United Kingdom – should engage in dialogues and develop the necessary security guarantees with the U.S. regarding the fate of our region in the world ," CNN quoted him as saying.
The leader declared that Ukraine would not "give in to Russia's ultimatum" following talks between US and Russian officials in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on February 18.
He reiterated that Ukraine had refused to yield to Russia's ultimatum three years ago, when Russia launched its military campaign, and stated that he would not yield this time either.
According to him, during the previous military campaign in Ukraine, Russia demanded that Ukraine reduce its troop numbers and allow Russia to establish a "pro-Russian leadership" in Ukraine.
"If we didn't heed these ultimatums at the most difficult time, why do we have the feeling that Ukraine will do it now?" he questioned.
During the dialogue, the US and Russia agreed on four principles. First, they agreed to re-establish the functions of their respective missions in Washington and Moscow. Second, they agreed to appoint a high-level team to support negotiations and resolve the conflict in Ukraine in a sustainable manner acceptable to all parties involved.
Thirdly, discussions and considerations should begin, examining how geopolitical and economic cooperation could lead to an end to the conflict in Ukraine. Fourthly, the officials participating in the talks will continue to coordinate to ensure this process proceeds in an effective manner.
Following the talks, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov welcomed the fact that both sides were listening to each other. According to him, the process for a Russia-US dialogue on Ukraine would begin "as soon as possible," with the appointment of diplomatic representatives between Russia and the United States.
Responding to a question about the possibility of NATO sending troops to Ukraine, he rejected the idea, calling the proposal "completely unacceptable."
In response to the talks, according to AFP, Zelensky decided to postpone his visit to Saudi Arabia until March 10, even though he had previously planned to visit the country after his visit to Türkiye.
