Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke out after his country was not allowed to attend US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia, even though the talks focused on resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
President Zelensky at a press conference in Ankara (Türkiye) on February 18.
Speaking while visiting Türkiye, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the US-Russia dialogue on the war in Ukraine without Ukraine's participation.
Any negotiations to end the fighting in Ukraine must be "fair" and involve European countries, including Türkiye, he said.
"Ukraine, Europe in a broad sense - and that includes the European Union (EU), Turkey and the United Kingdom - should engage in dialogue and develop the necessary security guarantees with the United States regarding the fate of our part of the world," CNN quoted him as saying.
The leader declared that Ukraine will not "give in to Russia's ultimatum" after talks between US and Russian officials in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) on February 18.
He recalled that Ukraine had not given in to Russia's ultimatum three years ago, when Russia launched its military campaign, and said that he would not give in this time either.
According to him, when previously conducting military operations in Ukraine, Russia asked Ukraine to reduce the number of soldiers and let Russia establish a "pro-Russian leader" in Ukraine.
“If we did not follow these ultimatums at the most difficult moment, why do we have the feeling that Ukraine will do it now?” he asked.
At the dialogue, the US and Russia agreed on four principles for the dialogue. The first is to re-establish the functions of their respective missions in Washington and Moscow. The second is to appoint a high-level team to support negotiations and resolve the conflict in Ukraine in a way that is sustainable and acceptable to all parties involved.
Third, to start discussing and thinking about how geopolitical and economic cooperation can lead to an end to the conflict in Ukraine. Fourth, the officials participating in the talks will continue to coordinate so that this process moves in an effective way.
After the talks, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov welcomed the fact that the parties listened to each other. According to him, the process of Russia-US dialogue on Ukraine will begin "as soon as possible", with the appointment of diplomatic representatives between Russia and the US.
Responding to a question about the possibility of NATO sending troops to Ukraine, he rejected the proposal, calling it "completely unacceptable."
In response to the conversation, according to AFP, Mr. Zelensky decided to postpone his visit to Saudi Arabia until March 10, even though he had previously planned to visit this country after visiting Türkiye.
