"We're going to have a fair deal with China. It's going to be fair," US President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on April 23.

"Everything is happening," the White House boss added, when asked if he was actively talking to Chinese leaders.

According to USA Today , Mr. Trump's statement was made in the context that the US leader has begun to soften his tone with China on the issue of tariffs, while China still shows no change in its stance.

On April 23, Chinese President Xi Jinping pointed out that the tariff and trade war "undermines the legitimate rights of all countries, damages the multilateral trading system, and impacts the world economic order."

Earlier, on April 22, President Trump said he was not looking to be "tough" with Beijing and that the 145% tax he had imposed on Chinese goods would be significantly reduced in the future.

The White House is considering reducing the high tariffs imposed on China during trade negotiations. On April 23, the Wall Street Journal (USA) quoted an unnamed senior White House official as saying that the tariffs could be reduced by 50-65%.

"People will be happy, but America will no longer be a country that is taken advantage of by other countries in the world," Mr. Trump said, referring to trade negotiations with about 100 countries/territories.

The US stock market jumped on April 23, after President Trump assured that he had no intention of firing Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, while his administration also signaled that it would de-escalate tensions with China.

On April 23, speaking to reporters, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that neither the US nor China considered the current tariffs imposed on each other to be "sustainable".

He said a disruption in trade between the two countries "does not serve the interests of either party," but noted that the Trump administration would not reduce tariffs if a trade deal was not reached.

On April 23, China affirmed that it is ready to participate in trade negotiations with the US. "China has pointed out from the beginning that there is no winner in tariff and trade wars. The door to negotiations is wide open," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a press conference in Beijing.

However, Mr. Guo noted: "On the one hand, saying that they want to reach an agreement with China, on the other hand, continuing to exert extreme pressure is not the right way."

Currently, formal trade negotiations between the US and China have not yet taken place. Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokesman He Yongqian previously said: "If you want to untie the bell, you have to find the person who tied it."
