Trump will declare a national emergency to deport immigrants

(VTC News) - US President-elect Donald Trump recently confirmed his plan to declare a national emergency and use the military to deport immigrants en masse.
President-elect Donald Trump confirmed on November 18 that he was declaring a national emergency to fulfill his campaign promise of mass deportations of illegal immigrants. Trump commented on a social media post by Tom Fitton of the Judicial Watch advocacy group. Fitton was referring to reports that the incoming administration was preparing an emergency declaration and using “military resources” to deport immigrants. “That’s right,” Trump wrote.
Mr. Donald Trump.

Mr. Donald Trump.

Mr. Trump has appointed several immigration hardliners to key cabinet positions. South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has been tapped to be secretary of homeland security, pending Senate confirmation. Former acting director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Tom Homan has been named “border czar.” “On day one, I will launch the largest deportation program in American history to get criminals out of our country,” Mr. Trump said at Madison Square Garden in the final days of the presidential race. During the campaign, Mr. Trump pledged to mobilize the National Guard to assist in deportation efforts. Experts told ABC News that such a move would mark a fundamental shift for the military, which has traditionally been kept out of domestic law enforcement. According to estimates by the American Immigration Council, there are about 11 million illegal immigrants living in the country. Deporting them could cost billions of dollars a year. In addition, mass deportations could have a far-reaching economic impact by leading to lost tax revenue and labor shortages. In his first post-election interview, Trump told NBC News that he had “no choice” but to pursue mass deportations, regardless of the cost. Trump has repeatedly said he would deport at least 15 million people — and possibly as many as 20 million — who are in the U.S. illegally, but that number has not been verified.
