Mr. Trump (right) and Mr. Obama chatted at Mr. Carter's funeral on January 9.
US President-elect Donald Trump said he and former President Barack Obama "probably" liked each other a lot despite "having different philosophies", after the two talked and laughed while attending the funeral of late President Jimmy Carter at the National Cathedral in Washington DC on January 9.
After photos of the two appearing to be close went viral, Trump said he "didn't realize how close" he was to Obama. "I said it looked like they liked each other and maybe we like each other. We have a little different philosophy, right? But maybe we get along. I don't know. I get along with everybody," Trump told NBC News.
The president-elect did not specify what he said, causing Mr. Obama to laugh.

According to lip-reading expert Jeremy Freeman, it seems that Mr. Trump and Mr. Obama are wary of the cameras pointing at them, so they sit shoulder to shoulder and want to appear intimate.
Based on the lip movements of the two men, the expert guessed that they seemed to be talking about international agreements. According to him, at one point Mr. Trump tilted his head toward Mr. Obama and said, "I withdrew from that (agreement). Those were the terms. Can you imagine that?"
Mr Obama laughed and Mr Trump added, “and then I will,” according to Mr Freeman.
While the two appeared to enjoy sitting next to each other at the funeral of the late President Carter, Vice President Kamala Harris, sitting in front of them, seemed to sigh after noticing them laughing. She then looked over her left shoulder at the two before looking straight ahead,
The playful interaction between Mr Trump and Mr Obama comes after a relationship that has been said to be strained between the two men over the past decade.
Mr Trump has addressed the unsubstantiated rumor that Mr Obama was born in Kenya, which prompted Mr Obama to release his birth certificate in 2011 showing his birthplace as Hawaii.
Mr Trump also accused Mr Obama of ordering the federal government to "spy" on his campaign over alleged ties to Russia after the 2016 election.
However, Mr. Obama also had certain criticisms of the president-elect. Speaking at the Democratic National Convention in August 2024, Mr. Obama said that Mr. Trump had "a strange obsession with crowd size" when campaigning.
