"It's okay. I don't care. Let them do it. They're just hurting themselves," US President Donald Trump told reporters on February 16, after a short trip to Daytona Beach to attend the Daytona 500 race.
He also said the US remains steadfast in its plan to impose reciprocal tariffs on goods from other countries, according to Reuters.
The Financial Times previously reported that the European Commission is expected to approve plans to review import restrictions on certain foods that do not meet EU standards, in order to protect the bloc's farmers.
The first items that could be targeted include US crops such as soybeans that contain pesticides banned for use by EU farmers, according to the officials, who asked not to be named.
Asked earlier about the report, a White House official said Trump was fighting for fair, reciprocal trade and would protect American farmers.
“We will continue to seek to expand global markets for high-quality American products,” the official said.
Tensions are rising between the US and the EU after President Trump decided to impose 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum from March 12, "reciprocal" tariffs from April, along with tariffs on cars, pharmaceuticals and semiconductor chips.
All of these tariffs would stack on top of each other, US officials said.
European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic is expected to travel to Washington on February 17 to discuss the new trade policy with US officials, according to a statement from the European Commission.
