Mr. Trump faces enemies on all sides because of his reciprocal tax policy.

Mr. Trump's tariff policy has caused him to face opposition not only from the world but also from within the United States. In that situation, the US has shown signs of 'giving in' to its rival China.

On April 23, a coalition of 12 US states filed a lawsuit to protest the Trump administration's tariffs, saying that Mr. Trump cannot impose tariffs without the approval of Congress.

Opposition within America

“President Donald Trump’s crazy tariff plan is not only economically reckless, it is illegal,” Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said in a statement.

According to AFP, this southwestern state has received support and joined the lawsuit with 11 other states with Democratic leaders. The states listed as plaintiffs in the lawsuit include Oregon, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York and Vermont.

In addition, nearly 1,400 American economists have signed a letter criticizing the tariff policy of the administration of US President Donald Trump.

According to Business Insider magazine, some prominent figures signed the above statement including Nobel Prize-winning economists James Heckman and Vernon Smith, economist and former Republican senator Phil Gramm and Mr. N. Gregory Mankiw - former chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under President George W. Bush.

Based on the letter, these experts are particularly critical of Mr. Trump's reciprocal tariffs. They argue that these tariffs are calculated based on a flawed and arbitrary formula, with no basis in reality.

Previously on April 22, the US-based International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicted that the global economy would slow down sharply this year due to the impact of Mr. Trump's tariffs and the wave of instability that followed, according to the Washington Post .

The IMF assessed that Mr Trump's tariffs - including a 10% levy on almost everything the US imports each year, plus significantly higher tariffs on goods from dozens of countries - would harm the US and Washington's trading partners.

According to a Harvard Youth Poll released on April 23, only 15% of young people believe that America is on the right track under Trump.

Not only that, a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on April 21 showed that President Trump's approval rating had dropped to its lowest level since he returned to the White House.

Accordingly, only 42% of survey participants felt satisfied with the way Mr. Trump ran the country, continuing to decrease compared to 43% in the survey three weeks ago, and 47% right after his inauguration on January 20.

Cool down with China

Not only facing opposition from within the US over tariff policies, the US leader also has to face a trade war with China and discontent from leading trading partners.

However, in recent days, Washington has begun to show signs of "giving in" to cool down and open up the possibility of negotiations in the face of the escalating trade war with China.

Speaking to the press at the White House on April 23, Mr. Trump affirmed that the US would have a deal with China and revealed that “everything is happening.”

The Wall Street Journal on the same day quoted informed sources revealing that the White House is considering cutting reciprocal tariffs to 50-65% on Chinese goods to ease tensions with Beijing.

Also on April 23, Chinese President Xi Jinping pointed out that the tariff and trade war "undermines the legitimate rights of all countries, harms the multilateral trading system, and impacts the world economic order."

Earlier on April 22, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that Foreign Minister Wang Yi had two separate phone calls with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger.

In the two phone calls, China's top diplomat called on Europe to work with Beijing to maintain international order in the face of "unilateral bullying" by the United States.

Meanwhile, European officials on April 24 said that the US's reciprocal tariffs could cause serious economic damage to both Europe and Washington if no agreement is reached, but expressed optimism that a trade deal with President Trump could be reached, according to NBC News.
