Trump's tariff truce with Canada and Mexico: What do each side gain and lose?

The US, Canadian and Mexican governments have made notable gains after three days of trade tariff tensions.

On February 3, US President Donald Trump announced that he would suspend tariffs on Mexico and Canada for 30 days, after a phone call with the leaders of the two countries.

The announcement came just hours before the tariffs were set to take effect. And after three days of tension, it appears all three sides have come out on top.

America

After three days of tension, both the governments of Mexico and Canada agreed to tighten border security and take stronger steps to tackle the smuggling of fentanyl across the border.

The BBC asserted that by using its position as an economic power to force other countries to make concessions, the US President's strategy has helped him solve two of the country's most pressing problems without causing American consumers to suffer the economic consequences of a trade war.

This is considered a resounding victory for President Trump's "America First" agenda when he took office less than a month ago. This political victory will also strengthen the prestige of the Trump administration, helping him fulfill his other commitments in the coming time.

However, it remains unclear whether Mr Trump will continue to implement the tariffs on Canada and Mexico after the 30-day period expires. This will prevent market confidence from returning to normal, meaning that businesses will likely continue to gradually withdraw from the US market, delaying investment in production and expansion in the US until the situation is more stable.

Canada

Similar to the US President, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau still benefits from Mr. Trump's decision to temporarily suspend tariffs.

For Prime Minister Trudeau, successfully averting a major trade war between the two countries is a major political victory in his final weeks in power, according to the BBC.

In return, Canada must do more to deliver on its commitments on immigration and combating fentanyl.

After a call with US President Trump on February 3, Mr. Trudeau said Canada would implement a 1.3 billion Canadian dollar (900 million USD) plan announced in December 2024 to prevent fentanyl trafficking and prevent immigration to the US.

Mexico

Like Canada, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has pledged to immediately send 10,000 Mexican troops to the US border to step up efforts to combat fentanyl and immigration trafficking.

But Mr Trump's temporary tariff suspension is a huge victory for President Claudia Sheinbaum, especially in the context of her strong confidence in Mr Trump's decision to postpone, according to the BBC.

In addition, President Sheinbaum also made US President Trump pledge that the country would do more to address the trafficking of heavy weapons from the US into Mexico, to prevent them from falling into the hands of gangs.

Most importantly, the tariff moratorium gives President Sheinbaum more time for her administration to craft a full deal and turn the tariff moratorium into a permanent one.

And if Ms. Sheinbaum can in fact completely remove Mexico from President Trump's sights, this will be an important first victory for the new government, when President Sheinbaum just took office in October 2024.
