On November 18, US President-elect Donald Trump confirmed that he plans to declare a national emergency on border security and use the US military to conduct mass deportations of illegal immigrants.

Mr Trump made the announcement in a short post on his Truth Social social media platform in response to a post by a conservative activist who said the president-elect was "ready to declare a national emergency and use military assets to reverse Biden's immigration status through mass deportation".

According to Al Jazeera television network, the statement is the most concrete message yet about Trump's plan to carry out a campaign promise to conduct "the largest deportation campaign" in US history.

However, the US President-elect will certainly face numerous legal challenges no matter what he does.

According to Mr. Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, senior member at the American Immigration Council, the law of this country stipulates that the president can only declare a national emergency and use emergency powers in specific situations, but does not include using the military to deport immigrants.

Immigration was a top issue during Mr Trump's campaign and the then Republican presidential candidate pledged to deport millions of people and secure the border with Mexico, after record numbers of illegal border crossings under President Joe Biden.

Authorities estimate that about 11 million people are living illegally in the United States. Mr. Trump's deportation plan could directly affect about 20 million families.

While the US government has struggled for years to manage the southern border with Mexico, Mr Trump has heightened concerns by declaring an ongoing “invasion” of migrants.

Mr Trump has not given details of his immigration curbs plan but has repeatedly pledged during the campaign to speed up deportations.

The number of illegal migrants crossing the border from Mexico counted by the US Border Patrol is now on par with 2020, the final year of Mr Trump's first term, after peaking at a record 250,000 in December 2023.
