Chairman of the Committee for Culture and Education Nguyen Dac Vinh said that building school culture and promoting exemplary adults is a fundamental solution to reduce school violence.
On the sidelines of the National Assembly on the morning of October 30, Chairman of the National Assembly's Committee on Culture and Education Nguyen Dac Vinh answered VnExpress about the situation and solutions to prevent school violence.
- What do you think about the recent school violence situation?
- School violence has probably always existed. But recently, there have been some phenomena showing that the level of violence and violent behavior among students and teenagers is very worrying. Students not only use their hands and feet but also insult each other's dignity. There have been many cases of students beating up their classmates, stripping them naked and then recording videos and posting them online.
What is more worrying is that the surrounding community, such as friends, witnessed the violence but did not show a clear attitude or take the initiative to prevent it. This is a very alarming issue that we have spoken out about for a long time.
There are many reasons for this situation, partly due to the influence of movies, partly due to social networks, partly due to the behavior of adults that children learn from. Currently, many children have access to information on social networks and the internet from a very early age, including unhealthy scenes and images.
- What is the solution to prevent and reduce school violence, according to you?
- I think there need to be many synchronous solutions, but the fundamental and long-term solution is to build a school culture for students. In modern society, in addition to the time at home when children receive education from grandparents and parents, most of the time they are at school, receiving education from teachers. Therefore, this needs to be done regularly, continuously, and long-term, and cannot be done overnight to see immediate results. From policy to action, changing people's awareness and behavior requires perseverance.
In school, teachers need to be exemplary, building a teacher-student relationship that truly loves and cares for each other. For example, there are very small things like how to make students politely greet the security guard when they meet him. If these small things are paid attention to, everything will gradually get better. If we do not teach students from such small issues, many conflicts will arise.
In addition to guiding children to access more healthy information and limiting negative information, schools and families also need to build their resistance so that they can recognize what is good and what is bad.
Children also need to learn how to express their disagreement when witnessing violence. Vietnam is building a happy society, where people love each other, everyone for each other, each person for one person. This spirit needs to be taught skillfully and subtly by teachers and parents through each lesson, subject or daily activities in the family.
By doing so, I believe that school and youth violence will decrease.

- How can adults set an example to limit school violence?
- The role model of adults from grandparents, parents, family members to society is very important to children. Adults have full awareness. Children often learn and follow adults. How adults think and act directly affects the next generation.
Therefore, adults need to act as role models. Life is hard to avoid moments of frustration, but everyone must learn to control themselves and not use violence to solve problems. Only then will children not be exposed to negative behavior and follow suit. We adults behave civilly with each other, respecting the law, and will gradually form such a lifestyle for them.
For example, nowadays, when parents go out on the street and intend to run a red light, they will be immediately reminded by their children. That is because children are educated to obey the Traffic Safety Law.
But some people wonder why children have such high awareness when they are young, but when they grow up, their self-awareness gradually decreases. I think that in addition to education, we need to strictly manage society and promote the spirit of respect for the law so that everyone has the awareness to comply.
Children are always special, I hope everyone tries to help them approach positive things from a young age.
- How should the school education program be designed to build school culture and create resistance for students against bad things?
- School culture is included in the content of each subject, from Vietnamese, English, Civic Education... to many other subjects. If the subjects are designed with high cultural education, it will instill a civilized way of life in children from a young age.
I still remember learning the lesson Two Goats Crossing a Bridge to remind us about giving way. Now, when we go out on the street, if everyone gives way to each other a little when there is a traffic jam, we will learn that and form such civilized behavior.
Therefore, the content of each lesson, in addition to imparting knowledge, needs to be well designed so that students can feel for themselves and gradually form their personality.
I know that both parents and teachers are busy and under a lot of pressure nowadays. So setting an example for children must be done at all times and in all places in daily life, not just during school hours. For example, the military semester program that many children participate in, only three weeks but they learn to fold their own blankets and express their love to their parents.
Everyone wants a better society, but it is difficult for anyone to avoid making mistakes. Children are no exception. When they make mistakes, teachers and parents should create conditions for them to have the opportunity to correct them. Don't put pressure on them because of a specific story, leading to negative thinking.
