Railway "giant" reaches transport revenue milestone of 3,723 billion VND

Vietnam Railways Corporation's business results in the first 9 months of 2024 could have been even better, if this unit had not suffered the negative impacts of storm No. 3 and post-storm circulation.

In the first 9 months of 2024, the freight transport output of Vietnam Railways Corporation reached 3.657 million tons and 2.76 billion ton-km, up 7% and 1.8% respectively over the same period.

During this period, the Corporation transported 5.762 million passengers and 2.24 billion passenger-km, up 22.6% and 18.1% respectively over the same period.

The above passenger and cargo operation results brought Vietnam Railways Corporation 3,723.6 billion VND in transportation revenue, an increase of 18.5% over the same period.

In recent times, Vietnam Railways Corporation has proactively and actively implemented many solutions to improve service quality and increase passenger transport output.

With the desire to provide more diverse and flexible services, maximally meeting the needs and increasingly approaching the tastes of customers, the Corporation has put into operation many new products and services and has received the attention and support of many classes of people and train passengers.

The growth in output and revenue of these products such as SE 19/20 train, Da Lat - Trai Mat train... has shown a positive change in product diversification of the Corporation.

In addition, the Corporation also coordinated with the National Tourism Administration and Provincial Tourism Departments to implement the Plan to promote and develop railway tourism for the period 2024 - 2026.

Regarding goods, the Corporation continues to implement solutions to increase the volume of freight transport, especially international freight by rail, with the total volume of imported and exported goods through the border gate increasing by 141% compared to the same period last year. In addition, the Corporation continues to actively work with the People's Committees of some provinces to increase the import and export of goods through the border gate by rail.

In addition, the Corporation has actively coordinated with related units to promote the application of information technology to support and improve the efficiency of transport management, while providing more services, utilities, and promotional programs for train passengers through cooperation with a variety of partners such as Vinpearl, Sun World, Momo, VN pay, Halovy, Epay...; integrating the electronic ticket sales system with many social networking platforms such as Zalo, Facebook, Youtube, ...

Initially agreed on a solution to connect and sell tickets on Google Maps, opening a portal to allow payment for train tickets for international cards issued by international banks (serving ticket purchases abroad) from August 1, 2024.

However, in the past 9 months, railway transport has been greatly affected by objective factors and most recently the consequences of storm No. 3 forced the Corporation to stop running trains on a number of railway routes (canceling 22 freight trains and over 54 passenger trains).

Freight transport output and revenue in September 2024 also decreased sharply compared to the same period in terms of tonnage, reaching only 69.8%; ton-km only reached 84.3% and revenue reached 80.4%; total damage due to storm No. 3 was nearly 200 billion VND.

In order to quickly restore the state of the railway infrastructure and stabilize the production and business activities of enterprises and the lives of workers affected by the storm and the circulation of storm No. 3, Vietnam Railways Corporation requests that competent authorities make recommendations to the Prime Minister and advise the Ministry of Finance to promptly allocate sufficient funds for the repair and restoration of the railway infrastructure to ensure the safety of the project and train operations.

Regarding property damage caused by enterprises' investment and the decline in railway transport revenue, the Corporation proposed that the Ministry of Transport consult with competent authorities to consider continuing to apply the policy of reducing railway infrastructure usage fees for the following years and have tax exemption and reduction policies to support enterprises in overcoming difficulties and quickly restoring production and business activities.
