Republican senators are in the process of selecting a new leader to take up the new position early next year. After the election on November 5, the Republican Party won a narrow majority in the US Senate against the Democratic Party with a ratio of 53-46, according to AFP on November 11.
Under the US Constitution, the Senate must vote to confirm nominations for key government positions, including executive and legislative seats.
However, according to the Constitution, presidents can "bypass" the vote if the Senate extends its recess. This is a measure to prevent an extended recess in the Senate from hindering the work of the government.
Donald Trump wrote on social media on November 10 that "any Republican senator running for majority leader in the US Senate must agree to the appointment during the Senate recess."
There are currently three senators competing for the majority leader seat, namely Rick Scott (Florida), John Thune (South Dakota), and John Cornyn (Texas), and all of them seem to agree with Mr. Trump's "demand" above.
In addition, US President-elect Trump also called on the Senate to temporarily suspend approval of judicial nominations while the Republican Party elects a leader in the Senate.
The next Senate will be sworn in early January next year.
