On January 20, US President Donald Trump was sworn in for his second term, marking one of the most impressive comebacks in US history.
For the second time in history, the United States has had a president serve two non-consecutive terms like Mr. Trump. The first was Mr. Grover Cleveland, who was elected for a second time more than 130 years ago.
Plan pool at... sky
Before going to Capitol Hill for the ceremony, Mr. Trump and his wife had a traditional tea party with his predecessor Joe Biden and his wife at the White House. Then, they went to the official ceremony location. As usual, the inauguration ceremony took place at 12:00 on January 20 (ie last night, Vietnam time). However, due to the bitter cold in Washington DC, the inauguration ceremony had to take place inside the Capitol building for the first time in 40 years instead of in front of the building. In a less grand but no less solemn ceremony, under the direction of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Roberts, Mr. Trump placed his hand on the Bible and took the oath in front of his family, members of Congress and hundreds of guests.
Mr. Donald Trump was sworn in, officially becoming the 47th president of the United States.
Americans optimistic about Trump 2.0 term
A CBS News/YouGov poll released on January 19 found that 60% of Americans are optimistic about President Donald Trump returning to power. The percentage of people who feel the same way when Joe Biden takes office in 2021 is 58%, compared to 56% during Trump's first term. The survey also found that most respondents believe the US economy will improve, prices of essential goods will fall, Americans' financial ability will improve, and the world will be more peaceful and stable.
All living former US presidents, including Mr. Biden, attended the inauguration and witnessed the transfer of power, something Mr. Trump did not do four years ago to Mr. Biden. Meanwhile, Mr. Trump made a rare move by inviting many foreign leaders such as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Argentine President Javier Milei to attend the ceremony. ChinesePresident Xi Jinping was also invited but sent Vice President Han Zheng in his place.
Another notable point is that a series of technology giants are on the guest list. In addition to billionaire Elon Musk, who is an important advisor to Mr. Trump, other prominent faces include Amazon Chairman Jeff Bezos, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and TikTok CEO Chau Thu Tu. All of the above businessmen and companies contributed to Mr. Trump's inauguration and related parties. Among them, many have changed their attitudes to befriend the leader recently. According to NBC News, Mr. Trump's inauguration committee received more than $200 million from sponsors, a record amount of donations in the history of US presidential inaugurations.
On the other hand, also due to the weather, the event to watch the inauguration on a large screen outside the Capitol with more than 220,000 tickets distributed to the public was canceled, a decision that Mr. Trump said was the right decision to ensure safety. Instead, the event was held inside the Capital One Arena with a capacity of only 20,000 seats in the capital. After the ceremonies at the Capitol building, the 47th president went to the arena and performed the parade there instead of along Pennsylvania Avenue as is traditional, according to AP.
Get to work!
Mr. Trump entered his second term with a series of changes compared to 2017. Contrary to the image of a "young" politician at that time, Mr. Trump is now experienced in both domestic and foreign affairs and has more experience in judging people and choosing his cabinet. The past four years out of office have also created conditions for Mr. Trump and his allies to prepare the foundation for "quick and strong" changes after this return.
Mr. Trump admits it is difficult to fulfill his campaign promises?
"Within hours of my inauguration, I will sign dozens of executive orders, in fact, close to 100," Trump confidently declared at his "Make America Great Again" victory rally at Capital One Arena on the night of January 19. In 2021, Biden signed 22 executive orders in his first week in office, a record number in modern times.
According to Reuters, Mr. Trump's first executive actions focused on tightening immigration regulations, abolishing regulations of the previous administration related to energy and the environment, and issuing new import taxes on foreign goods. At the rally on January 19, Mr. Trump also announced that he would eliminate "extreme woke" culture from the US military and ordered the construction of a new missile shield for the US similar to Israel's Iron Dome system.
"Four long years of American decline will be overshadowed, and we will begin a brand new day of American strength, prosperity, dignity, and pride," Mr. Trump said.
TikTok "resurrected" thanks to Mr. Trump
Video-sharing app TikTok is back in the US after Mr Trump said he would restore access to the platform when he returns to the White House. Mr Trump's previous administration had enacted a law requiring parent company ByteDance to divest from TikTok or the app would be banned. TikTok shut down on January 18 just before the deadline but was restored "thanks to the efforts of President Trump". Speaking at an event on January 19, Mr Trump said "TikTok must be saved" and pledged to extend the deadline for the company to find a deal. In his opinion, the US should own 50% of TikTok.
