World media reported that at the Republican National Convention taking place in Milwaukee (Wisconsin) from July 15-18, the party officially awarded the party's representative ticket to former President Trump in the election scheduled to take place on November 5.
The decision came after the former US President won a landslide victory in the Republican primary election campaign. This is the third consecutive time the party has chosen Mr. Trump as its presidential candidate.
Earlier that day, Mr. Trump also announced his decision to choose Ohio's young Senator JD Vance as his running mate for Vice President.
AP news agency reported that Senator JD Vance, full name James David Vance, was born on August 2, 1984 (40 years old) in Middletown, Ohio. Mr. JD Vance graduated from Ohio University, Yale Law School and served in the US Marine Corps in Iraq.
He was elected to the Ohio Senate in 2022 and began his term in January 2023.
Earlier in the day, the Republican National Committee opened its national convention, two days after Mr Trump was attacked in an assassination attempt while he was campaigning in Pennsylvania. Mr Trump was grazed by a bullet that grazed his ear, killing the assailant instantly.
The first day of the convention focused on the economy, discussing policies related to tariffs and tax cuts proposed by candidate Donald Trump to restart the economy.
The former president said he wants to impose tariffs on trading partners and eliminate tips, while lowering corporate tax rates. The Republican candidate’s platform also aims to curb inflation and quickly lower consumer prices, in addition to pumping more oil, natural gas and coal.
The Republican convention agenda will also discuss measures to address illegal immigration into the United States, in part through a robust deportation program. In addition, Mr. Trump has proposed eliminating President Joe Biden’s policies on developing electric vehicles and renewable energy markets.
