The administration of US President Joe Biden on January 10 extended a program to help about 900,000 immigrants from four countries to be allowed to work for an additional 18 months.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on January 10 extended enrollment in the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program for 900,000 migrants from Venezuela, El Salvador, Ukraine and Sudan, helping them to defer deportation and be granted work permits for another 18 months, according to Reuters.

President Biden, a Democrat, has significantly increased the number of migrants eligible for TPS since taking office in 2021. TPS, which is available to migrants from countries experiencing natural disasters, armed conflicts or other extraordinary events, currently covers more than 1 million people from 17 countries.

Meanwhile, Republican President-elect Donald Trump has sought to end most TPS enrollment during his 2017-2021 term but has been blocked by the courts. Trump returns to the White House on January 20 and is expected to attempt to end most TPS protections.

However, the Biden administration's move on January 10 fell short of demands from activists and some Democrats to expand TPS to new immigrants and people from other countries.

Todd Schulte, president of advocacy group FWD.us, said extending TPS would allow hundreds of thousands of people to continue “contributing to their communities, supporting their families and strengthening the economy,” but also urged Biden to expand TPS to Nicaragua and other countries.

About 600,000 Venezuelans are eligible for TPS, the largest group in the program. The Biden administration, which granted TPS to Venezuelans for the first time in 2021, cited high levels of crime in Venezuela linked to political and economic instability under President Nicolas Maduro, according to Reuters.
