The high-income fish cage farming model in Ngan Truoi - Cam Trang lake of Mr. Ngo Van Minh (Vu Quang town).

Taking advantage of the large surface of Ngan Truoi - Cam Trang lake and good water quality, 3 years ago, Mr. Ngo Van Minh in residential group 4, Vu Quang town (Vu Quang district) boldly invested nearly 1 billion VND to raise fish in cages. His model mainly raises climbing fish, grass carp, and common carp in 14 plastic cages, feeding them daily with shrimp and small fish caught in the wild and supplementing them with industrial feed.

Mr. Minh shared: “Every year, I raise 2 batches of grass carp and common carp, 1 batch of catfish. Each batch has from 500 - 2,000 fingerlings (depending on the type of fish) in a 120 m3 cage. When sold, each cage has an output of about 1 ton of product, consumed in markets both inside and outside the province. If all goes well, after deducting production costs, each year the profit is from 800 million to 1 billion VND.”

Vu Quang people catch freshwater fish around the stream flowing into Ngan Truoi - Cam Trang lake.

Mr. Le Ngoc Trung - Vice Chairman of Vu Quang Town People's Committee informed: "Taking advantage of the Ngan Truoi - Cam Trang reservoir area, 50 households in the area have built cages to raise catfish, climbing perch, carp, grass carp, silver carp... These households have joined together to establish 1 cooperative and 4 cooperative groups to facilitate production, exchange experiences, find markets, and protect the production environment. To encourage production, the town has a policy of supporting 3 million VND/cage and always creates the most favorable conditions for people to do business".

With the advantage of having the third largest multi-purpose reservoir in the country and a dense system of irrigation dams, natural lakes, rivers and streams, in recent years, Vu Quang has promoted aquaculture and fishing activities. Currently, along with the natural catch output of about 85 tons/year, this mountainous district also maintains 166 hectares of cages and ponds, producing 144 tons/year; since the beginning of the year, it has raised 108 tons and exploited 65 tons.

Along with Vu Quang, other localities in the province have also taken advantage of their inherent potential and advantages to maintain exploitation output and promote freshwater aquaculture activities. Inland areas, there are more and more aquaculture models with high economic efficiency, raising valuable economic objects, contributing to solving local employment, increasing income, and improving the lives of thousands of workers.

Aquaculture development activities are closely linked to the regeneration and protection of aquatic resources in localities to increase exploitation output; the most prominent of which are: Thach Ha, Loc Ha, Nghi Xuan, Cam Xuyen...

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Thanh - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Loc Ha district said: "The locality currently has 155 hectares of freshwater aquaculture, with an annual output of over 120 tons. The main farming species are traditional fish species (grass carp, bighead carp, bighead carp, tilapia, giant freshwater prawn, apple snails, etc.), the main farming methods are extensive and improved extensive farming. The localities with a lot of farming are: Ich Hau, Phu Luu, Thach My, Hong Loc, Tan Loc, etc.

In addition, exploiting the freshwater area in Loc Ha each year also yields about 30 - 35 tons of shrimp and various types of fish. This activity is mainly carried out by small-capacity boats, boats without engines or manual fishing.
