In recent years, green plum has been considered one of the crops that bring high economic value to many gardeners in some localities in Soc Trang province, including Long Phu district.
With the economic potential of green plum trees, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Long Phu district has implemented a model of growing green plum trees at Mr. Le Quoc Lam's household, An Duc hamlet, Dai Ngai town. Up to now, the plum garden is in the main season, with a bumper crop.
Mr. Le Quoc Lam's green plum garden has an area of 3,000 square meters. After 17 months of planting, the green plum tree is ready for harvest.
In the early stages, when the tree flowers and bears fruit, to prevent fruit flies and other pests from attacking the fruit, he uses nets to cover each bunch or the entire tree.
According to Mr. Lam, this method does not require the use of pesticides, bringing two benefits: reducing production costs and consumers also prefer when fruits are produced in a safe way.
Mr. Lam confided: “Through the support of the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, I boldly converted the crop to “harvest sweet fruits”. The investment cost for the plum garden was supported by 50% by the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, I only invested about 120 million VND more.

Green sugar plum is quite easy to grow, just need to water and fertilize according to the technical process recommended by the industry for the tree to grow well. This first crop, I harvested about 3.5 tons.
After harvesting this batch of plums, I will stop picking plums for about 2 months to take care of the tree and then pick fruit again as usual, because the characteristic of this green sugar plum variety is to produce fruit all year round.
The selling price of green plums purchased by traders at the garden is 80,000 VND/kg, the estimated profit from the plum crop in the first months of the year is more than 200 million VND, the above amount is many times higher than growing other colors.
Mr. Lam chose to grow plums organically, without spraying pesticides on the plants or fruit, and the fertilizer used for the plants is completely organic.
According to Mr. Lam, the secret to keeping the plums sweet is that during the harvest, he limits watering and does not fertilize the plants. In the near future, Mr. Lam plans to expand the plum growing area to 7,000m2 to increase the plum output to the market, meeting consumer demand.
“Green sugar plum is a new crop in the town. Initial results show that the tree brings a good source of income to gardeners, especially through the monitoring process from when the tree is young until it bears fruit, it is quite suitable for the local natural conditions, proving that the tree has been and is bearing fruit very well.
To enhance the value and promote local specialties, the town is completing the dossier for green sugar plums to participate in the OCOP product ranking competition in 2024.
At the same time, the locality also has a plan to replicate the model of growing green sugar plums in the town area," said comrade Nguyen Ngoc Huyen Trang - Vice Chairman of Dai Ngai Town People's Committee.
Comrade Lam Van Vu - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Long Phu district (Soc Trang province) informed that the area of green plum cultivation in the district is more than 8 hectares, of which some gardeners grow more than 1 hectare.
From the economic potential of green sugar plum trees, the district has implemented support models for home gardeners. Most of the models have produced fruit with good productivity and yield, typically the household of Mr. Le Quoc Lam.
In the future, the unit will promote farmers to convert ineffective crops to growing green sugar plums and some other plum varieties with high economic value, because plum trees are suitable for the land in the district, in order to contribute to increasing income and improving the lives of farmers.
