Worshiping the Kitchen Gods on the 23rd of December is a long-standing tradition of the Vietnamese people. Many tenants are wondering whether they have to perform this ritual or not?
Do I need to worship the Kitchen Gods when I rent a house?
According to Vietnamese folk beliefs, on the 23rd of December every year, families will hold a ceremony to send the Kitchen Gods to the Jade Emperor to report on the events of the past year, including the affairs of the homeowner's family.
Although the worshiping ceremony for Ong Cong and Ong Tao is different between the three regions, in general, people often prepare a full, solemn and thoughtful offering tray to pray for a prosperous new year.
However, not everyone has the conditions to hold the ceremony at home, because in reality, many people leave their hometowns to work in big cities, so they have to live in rented houses or rented rooms. Therefore, many people wonder if they need to worship Ong Cong Ong Tao in rented houses?
Many people believe that for rented houses, it is not necessary to make offerings on the 23rd of December because it is only good for the homeowner.
Feng Shui experts say that worshiping is up to each person. If circumstances and conditions do not allow, the tenant does not necessarily have to worship the Kitchen God, especially when the landlord has already performed a ceremony for his house.
If families or students can afford to rent a private house and not live with the landlord, they should hold a ceremony on December 23.
For families who rent, people do not need to be too fussy when worshiping Tao Quan , as long as it shows the homeowner's sincerity to the gods who govern the land and the gods who govern the kitchen.
Depending on folk beliefs, each region has different offerings… the worship of Ong Tao also has differences. In the North, people often worship at the family altar to thank both the gods and the Tao Quan. People also worship a live carp in a basin of water with the meaning that the fish will turn into a dragon to take Ong Tao to heaven. After the worship, the fish will be released.
In the Southern region, every house has an altar on the kitchen. When worshiping Tao Quan in the kitchen, the stove is usually turned on to worship, with the meaning of prosperity. People often worship Ong Cong Ong Tao at night, between 8pm and 11pm. They believe that at the end of the day, when the whole family has finished dinner, no longer cooks or uses the kitchen, they can send Ong Tao off to meet the Jade Emperor. People in the Central region often worship a paper horse with a full saddle and bridle...
Although the offerings and worship methods may vary from region to region, feng shui experts advise that families should worship Ong Cong Ong Tao before 12 noon on the 23rd of December. After worshiping Tao Quan, the Taos have gone to heaven, from then until the 30th of Tet, the homeowner will clean and cover the altar with ginger water soaked in wine or five-spice water, then arrange the new offerings on the altar to prepare for Tet.
For businesses that do not involve cooking, there is no need to worship Ong Tao. Because Tao Quan is the god who oversees the kitchen, if the store does not have a kitchen, and there is no Tao Quan residing there, there is no need to worship Ong Cong Ong Tao.
