The model of organic durian production in Son Dinh commune, Cho Lach district (Ben Tre province) was selected by the district to implement durian in Son Phung hamlet. The model appeared in 2021 and by 2023 had positive results and is being effective.
Deploy, implement the model
In Cho Lach district, the current durian area is about 1,300 hectares, with an output of about 20 tons/hectare. Durian is grown throughout the district.
In order for Cho Lach durian to increasingly meet domestic and foreign markets, gardeners in Cho Lach district are currently promoting the HC durian cooperative model in Son Phung hamlet, Son Dinh commune (Son Phung organic durian cooperative (SRHCSP).
Organic durian growing model in Son Dinh commune, Cho Lach district, Ben Tre province. The organic durian growing model has 15 households achieving a revenue of 1 billion/ha, with one household achieving 3 billion/ha thanks to the high price of durian.
For many years, durian products produced in Cho Lach have been inconsistent in quality and have not met market demands.
To overcome this situation, Vice Chairman of Cho Lach District People's Committee Pham Van Hon said: "Organic durian production is an inevitable need because in production, there must be measures to improve the soil to ensure product quality and long-term land use.
Besides, the particularly important role of organic matter in soil fertility is to contribute to improving the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil and providing many important nutrients for crops.
Providing trace elements and nutrients from organic fertilizers is important in increasing the quality of agricultural products, making fruits more delicious and less susceptible to pests and diseases.
Organic fertilizers are a necessary food source for the activity of microorganisms in the soil. In particular, HC is an indispensable source of nutrients for the growth and development of crops, helping to improve the loose soil, which is the foundation for good plant growth and development, increasing longevity as well as increasing productivity and fruit quality, contributing to increasing income for farmers.
Pursuant to Official Dispatch No. 868/UBND-NN of the People's Committee of Cho Lach district dated May 4, 2021 on approving the plan to implement the Son Phung organic durian production model in 2021, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) of Cho Lach district has selected the organic durian production model to be implemented on the basis of the HC Durian Cooperative Group in Son Phung hamlet, Son Dinh commune, which has been certified with VietGAP standards with 21 households and a production area of 9.62 hectares.
Durian producers voluntarily participated, were highly determined and complied with the regulations on HC durian production. These 21 farming households were selected as members of the SRHCSP Group, Son Dinh commune, which met VietGAP standards and had durian gardens that produced stable fruit. Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Cho Lach district, Dr. Bui Thanh Liem, talked about the SRHCSP Group: “To build a durian production model in the HC direction, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, together with the Commune Farmers' Association, the People's Committee of Son Dinh commune and the consulting unit, organized a survey of production conditions in the growing area, buffer zone, current production status, and durian planting and care process in Son Phung hamlet. Through the survey, it was assessed that the households participating in the model had about 70% HC cultivation process.
The cooperative group has implemented VietGAP standards, which is a favorable condition for disseminating knowledge and regulations on organic standards.
When in operation, Son Phung Organic Durian Nest always ensures: There is a safe storage area for fertilizers and pesticides. There are signs to identify and warn of hazards. Properly implement the HC care process for durian.
High efficiency model
Head of the Son Phung Organic Durian Group - Le Ngoc Son excitedly said: "With the support of the Faculty of Agriculture - Can Tho University, 21 households recorded production diaries, ensuring the harvest isolation period for each type of pesticide and not using banned substances in durian care during the flowering and fruiting stages.
The group often uses HC fertilizers such as: An Dien organic mineral fertilizer, ECOZYME mineral HC foliar fertilizer, KOMIX microbial HC phosphate fertilizer, Song Gianh HC-15 microbial HC fertilizer...
This cooperative is also a model for using homemade HC fertilizer by composting agricultural waste with trichoderma fungus to fertilize durian trees to reduce production costs.
Of the 21 households in the group, 15 have a revenue of more than 1 billion VND/ha. One household alone has a revenue of more than 3 billion VND/ha thanks to the high price of durian this year. The rest have a small land area so their income is not much.
Chairman of Cho Lach District People's Committee (Ben Tre Province) Pham Anh Linh highly appreciated and directed: "Through the conversion process and after 3 years of implementation, 21 participating households in accordance with the standards for organic durian production were granted a certificate by FAO Certification and Testing Joint Stock Company for Son Phung Organic Durian Nest in Son Dinh Commune meeting organic standards (TCVN 11041-2:2017) according to Decision No. 13-12.23/QDCN-HCTT-FAO dated December 15, 2023 on granting certificates of products in accordance with standards and regulations. The organic durian production model of Son Phung Organic Durian Nest needs to be replicated not only in Cho Lach District".
