Believe in tears
The mobile working group of Nhan Dan Newspaper, including writers, photographers and television reporters, received orders to go to the storm's eye on September 8 to update news promptly... Like every other "hot spot" work trip, journalist Thanh Dat and his colleagues returned to Quang Ninh as soon as the storm made landfall, sharing that, although they had a lot of experience working on storms and floods, they had never witnessed such a terrible storm. The agency had prepared very carefully in terms of means, equipment, supplies, food... and the policy was to work in a proactive manner while ensuring safety.
Journalist Thanh Dat added: “ During the past days of work, our team has been livestreaming to provide information in the most authentic, proactive, and responsive way about the storm situation. In the context of having to have fast information while ensuring safety, the most important experience I have applied is that when we see enough necessary information, we must stop immediately to immediately transmit information to the agency... If we are too greedy and get caught up in the event, it is easy to put ourselves in danger. The most important thing is to keep yourself safe first, when you are safe, you can work well. In addition, with such special work areas, you should use your phone and carefully prepare supporting equipment such as card readers. At the agency, there is a team waiting for news at any time, so when the hottest images are transmitted, they will immediately reach the public... This is also an important lesson in the work of journalists that I have learned and found effective. Hopefully this will be useful to young journalists who have been working during storms and floods."
Sharing about the touching story and photo that has been spreading on social media these days, journalist Thanh Dat said that while working on the terrible news about the storm, he and journalist Son Bach discussed the topic together. Both of them thought that currently, the images in the newspapers are showing too much sadness, pain, and loss. If we continue to delve into that negative news, it will make people confused and afraid.
“ We discussed what we had to do differently, to look for bright, positive, humane points to add hope in this difficult time… We started to explore social networking sites and accidentally saw the cry for help from the son of a captain who was missing at sea. Immediately, we contacted the family, went there and witnessed the story of Captain Le Van Tien miraculously reuniting with his family after exactly 12 hours of being pushed back out to sea by the waves. And “12 hours of life and death to find a way to live from the open sea to return” with the memorable moment I captured when the wife met her husband again and burst into tears… was born like that. Until now, when I tell it, I am still really moved and keep remembering the desperate call, the burst of tears when seeing her husband return from the dead of Ms. Mui - Mr. Tien's wife” - Journalist Thanh Dat choked up.
The special photo of journalist Thanh Dat, shared by many people, seems to have ignited the flames of hope and a strong belief in the miracles to come, as journalist Xuan Ba once wrote: " Still have to believe in tears, both tears of happiness and tears of pain...".

Join hands, join efforts, join hearts in times of trouble
In the appeal to the flood victims of the Vietnam Journalists Association, it was written: “ In the past few days, storm No. 3 has been causing widespread flooding, and the northern provinces of our country are currently suffering serious human and material losses. During the storms and floods, the Association at all levels and the team of journalists do not fear difficulties and hardships, joining hands with the whole country to prevent, combat, and overcome the consequences of floods and storms; strictly complying with the direction and management of the Government and being proactive and flexible in implementing prevention, combat, and response to storms and floods...
Together with the frontline forces against storms and floods, journalist members are not afraid of danger, rushing into the eye of the storm and in the flood area; facing difficulties and dangers, accepting to sacrifice the most important interests, making every effort to complete their tasks, promptly providing information about storms and floods to the public at home and abroad. Journalists also silently contribute their efforts in calling for kindness, sharing, supporting, and helping those who are hungry and facing many difficulties during storms and floods…”.
In fact, in recent days, in addition to flexible and timely implementation of operations, the support for flood victims has also received a lot of attention and response from many press agencies. A series of newspapers such as Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper, Tuoi Tre Newspaper, Thanh Nien Newspaper, Vnexpress Newspaper, Tien Phong Newspaper... have all "joined in" with meaningful charity programs.
One of the first units to launch this call for social security activities is Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper. Journalist To Dinh Tuan - Editor-in-Chief said: “ As soon as the storm and the circulation of storm Yagi caused terrible damage to the people, on the morning of Sunday, September 8, 2024, we launched the program "Towards the Beloved North" to mobilize social resources to support the people of the North. Updated to the afternoon of September 11, 2024, the results of the campaign to support the people of the North who suffered heavy damage due to storms and floods have reached more than 3 billion VND. The hearts of compatriots from all over the country and overseas Vietnamese sent to support the people of the North affected by natural disasters are still multiplying every hour. We not only deployed this program on print newspapers, electronic newspapers, Fanpage but also coordinated with "Vi Nhan Ai" of MoMo, Zalopay with more than 30,000 people participating in the contribution. This coordination helps us see the solidarity of our compatriots at home and abroad, from those who donate hundreds of millions, some who donate 1,000 VND... showing that all classes, rich or poor, the healthy are helping the torn, the less torn are helping the more torn... It is truly touching... These days, we seem to be constantly accompanying our compatriots in the North who are suffering from storms and floods. Reporters spread out to the provinces to work, not minding the rain, wind, landslides and mudslides, to go directly to the scene and directly hand over the support from readers to many urgent cases. We will continue to volunteer to be a bridge to connect millions of kind hearts".
It can be said that there are still many press agencies that continue their journey as a bridge to accompany each other in news, charity, in every possible aspect... The journey of working and working together to support our compatriots in the face of natural disasters and floods... is still spreading strongly. At these times, in difficult times, we love each other more, more urge the spirit of dedication and have more great spiritual strength... as one of our colleagues shared: Doing the duty of a journalist, to see that we still have some meaning in this life, to share the pain of people in flood areas... The journey of a journalist today is not only about news on the front line but also carrying a heart of compassion, love... for our compatriots, that is affection! For them, working is a mission and the true meaning of a JOURNALIST with a capital letter.
