Taking advantage of the forest and fruit trees in many places, in recent years, Mr. Hoang Van Cuong in Quang Lac commune, Lang Son city (Lang Son province) has had a good income from beekeeping for honey. From the essence of bees, Mr. Cuong makes many products, including ivy honey.

Quang Lac Commune, Lang Son City is a locality with a large forest area with ivy and many other natural plants. Therefore, Mr. Cuong's family has developed beekeeping to take advantage of the forest flowers.

Must regularly check to grasp the health of the bee colony

Currently, Mr. Cuong is the second generation in his family to develop the beekeeping business. His success with honey bees has helped Mr. Cuong's family's economy to be quite stable.

Unlike other livestock, raising bees for honey does not require spending money on food. You only need to have a firm grasp of bee habits, techniques, along with diligence and accurate calculation of flowering time to be sure of success.

Because bees are raised naturally, the yield and quality of honey depends entirely on the quality of the flowers.

Mr. Cuong shared that each different flower will produce a different type of honey, so "each season has its own food", in addition to the local advantage of natural wild flowers with ivy; Mr. Cuong has calculated and brought his bee colonies to different areas inside and outside Lang Son province, so that the bees can find food and collect natural honey.

The start of a new year is also the time when Mr. Cuong's work is quite hard, he has to repair the beehives, making them solid and sturdy so that moving the swarms to other places is most convenient.

In particular, it is necessary to regularly grasp the development situation of fruit growing areas such as lychee, custard apple, longan, grapefruit, acacia and forests with natural flowers in Bac Giang province, Huu Lung and Chi Lang districts, Lang Son city, Lang Son province... to bring bee colonies there.

Mr. Cuong added: "I have to regularly exchange with beekeepers in other localities to grasp the flowering situation of the plants, only then can I calculate and move my bee colonies back. If it is too early, the flowers will not have much nectar, and if it is too late, the gardeners will have to spray insecticides, insecticides and fruit set drugs... which will greatly affect my bee colonies."

According to Mr. Cuong's experience, the queen bee is the deciding factor in the "health" of the entire bee colony, which will directly affect honey production. Only healthy queen bees can reproduce in large numbers, so in the process of raising bees, beekeepers must always pay attention to the queen bee. Every 6 months to 1 year, Mr. Cuong replaces all the queen bees in his family's bee colony.

Up to now, Mr. Cuong is maintaining and taking care of about 100 bee colonies. Each year, the bee colonies harvest over 500 liters of honey, bringing in an income of nearly 200 million VND.

Not only enriching his family, to help other households in the area develop beekeeping, since 2017, Mr. Cuong and other households in the area have established the Quang Hong Agricultural Service Cooperative with 8 beekeeping members.

The cooperative was established with the goal of promoting the economic development of households in the cooperative. Beekeeping members share their experiences with each other with passion, enthusiasm and completely free of charge.

Not only exchanging experiences at meetings, but also every day on Zalo groups and personal information pages, members have always interacted and supported each other to develop beekeeping together.

In 2024, joy will come to the beekeeping members of the Cooperative when 2 honey products have been evaluated and certified by the local authorities as 3-star OCOP products. This will be a great motivation for Mr. Cuong and his family to develop the beekeeping profession for honey in the following years.
