Returning to the countryside to become a farmer, raising "specialty" animals in tanks.
Of the 19 agricultural extension models implemented in Hoai Nhon town (Binh Dinh province) in 2023, many were more successful than expected, especially the mudless eel farming model.
After returning from working abroad in Japan, Hoang Xuan Truc (born in 1990), residing in Thien Duc neighborhood, Hoai Huong ward (Hoai Nhon town), continued to wander the country, doing various jobs in provinces and cities in the South, but none of them provided him with a stable income.
In early 2021, Mr. Truc returned to his hometown and decided to start his own business with a mudless eel farming model. To prepare for his startup idea, he had previously spent time visiting many mudless eel farming models in localities inside and outside the province to thoroughly learn the farming techniques.
Selected by the Hoai Nhon Town Agricultural Service Center for support in building a 30m2 mudless eel farming model with 5 cement tanks, each approximately 6m2 in size, Mr. Truc purchased 9,000 eel fry from eel farms in the South to raise. Thanks to scientific and proper care, he experienced success right from the initial stage of raising the fry.
According to Mr. Hoang Xuan Truc, in order for eels to grow well and have fewer diseases, the farm must ensure good ventilation in the summer and be well-protected from wind in the winter to keep the farm warm.
"Eels are quite sensitive to water conditions, so the water used for raising eels must be changed every two days. The water must be thoroughly filtered to remove impurities, and antibiotics should be used to prevent diseases in the eels," Mr. Truc said.

Starting his business successfully, in mid-2021, Mr. Truc expanded his eel farming model to 10 tanks, each stocked with 2,000 fingerlings. Thanks to selecting a uniform and high-quality source of fingerlings, after 11 months of farming, the eels reached an average weight of 250-300g/eel, with a survival rate of 85%, yielding a total of 1.5 tons. With wholesale prices ranging from 120,000 to 130,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, Mr. Truc earned a profit of over 120 million VND.
Furthermore, in the future, this farmer will continue to expand his eel farming model, combining it with grass cultivation and cattle raising to create a closed-loop farming model aimed at reducing costs and increasing output value.
According to Mr. Su Van Hung, a technical officer at the Hoai Nhon Town Agricultural Service Center, in 2023, Mr. Hoang Xuan Truc's eel farming model in cement tanks continued to achieve unexpected success. The eels grew well, with a survival rate of 90%, an average weight of 9-10 eels per kilogram, and a yield of approximately 900 kg per farming cycle (6 months).

Based on the practical experience and economic effectiveness of pilot agricultural extension models in the area in 2023, to date, 10 farming households in Hoai Nhon town, Binh Dinh province have accessed, learned from, and invested in expanding models such as raising black snails, spotted snakehead fish, and especially the mudless eel farming model, which is increasingly being replicated.
Households participating in the models receive attention and technical support from the Hoai Nhon Town Agricultural Service Center.
With funding allocated for agricultural extension activities from the province and town, in 2023, the Hoai Nhon Town Agricultural Service Center implemented many agricultural extension models, suitable to the production needs of localities, contributing to the transfer and application of science and technology into production, diversifying crops and livestock, improving production efficiency, and increasing income for people.
According to Ngo Dinh Tuy, Director of the Hoai Nhon Town Agricultural Service Center, over the past year, the Hoai Nhon Town Agricultural Service Center has proactively coordinated with localities to build 19 agricultural extension models.

These include 3 provincial-level agricultural extension models: an improved rice intensive cultivation model focusing on quality and organic farming on a 5-hectare scale in Xuan Vinh village (Hoai My commune); an integrated pest management (IPM) model for corn against fall armyworm on a 1-hectare area in Trung Hoa neighborhood (Tam Quan Nam ward); and an intensive sesame cultivation model on a 2-hectare scale on converted rice land in Thai Lai neighborhood (Hoai Xuan ward), along with 16 local agricultural extension models for livestock farming and crop cultivation.

"Encouragingly, all five agricultural extension models for livestock and crop farming implemented in the town at the beginning of 2023 yielded results beyond expectations. Notable examples include: the model for producing new varieties of yellow cauliflower, free-range chicken farming, and raising black snails in earthen ponds... The most successful models are the farming of spotted snakehead fish and eels in cement tanks," said Mr. Ngo Dinh Tuy.
According to the Director of the Hoai Nhon Town Agricultural Service Center, throughout the implementation of the model, the staff of the Hoai Nhon Town Agricultural Service Center regularly transferred technology to participating farmers, guiding them on cultivation, care, and disease control processes through various methods, including direct communication and exchanges via phone and Zalo, helping households feel secure in their production.
