Raising medicinal chickens, poverty goes away by itself

Ba Che is a mountainous district with large hilly areas and fresh air, so it is very favorable for growing large timber trees, indigenous trees and medicinal plants.

Taking advantage of that, many households here have developed a chicken farming model using natural grazing methods combined with the use of feed supplemented with some medicinal herbs, thereby escaping poverty.

The family of Mr. Hoang Van Hung (Tan Tien village, Don Dac commune, Ba Che district, Quang Ninh province) is one of such households.

When we arrived, Mr. Hung was boiling a large pot of medicinal herbs to prepare drinking water for the chickens. Not only did he boil medicinal water for the chickens to drink, Mr. Hung also combined crushed medicinal herbs with rice bran, corn bran... to make food for the chickens.

Besides going to the forest to collect medicinal herbs, Mr. Hung's job from morning to night is to take care of the chickens.

Mr. Hung said that his family had previously experimented with raising soft-shell turtles to develop the economy. However, soft-shell turtles are voracious eaters and grow slowly, only growing about 0.5 kg/year and it takes 3 years to be able to sell.

Realizing that the economic efficiency of raising soft-shell turtles was not high, Mr. Hung started to switch to raising chickens in 2018.

At first, his family also faced many difficulties due to lack of capital and experience, so in the first crop of raising chickens, his family almost lost everything after an epidemic. However, with the determination to get rich in his homeland, he continued to raise chickens.

Thanks to support with loans, attending training courses and proactively learning more about chicken farming, his family initially had success.

With a stable income from raising chickens, Mr. Hung gradually increased his flock in the following seasons. However, as the flock increased, so did the cost of raising the chickens, the risk of disease, the need to use more antibiotics and increasingly high doses.

So from raising chickens normally, in 2021, Mr. Hung switched to raising chickens in the direction of natural grazing and using feed mixed with medicinal herbs.

Thanks to being naturally grazed under the tree canopy, eating and drinking herbal supplements such as yellow flower tea, perilla, ginseng, honeysuckle, ginseng..., Mr. Hung's family's medicinal chicken products are favored by consumers.

Moreover, this method also helps Mr. Hung's family save money on animal feed as well as veterinary medicine, especially antibiotics.

Double effect from "luxury chicken farming"

"Since raising medicinal chickens, I have seen that the chickens are much healthier, no longer have white or green stools, constipation, coccidiosis, black-headed parasites... After 6-7 months of free-range farming combined with medicinal supplements, the chicken meat is very delicious, fatty, has beautiful yellow skin and is very crispy" - Mr. Hung said.

Mr. Hung shared that there are many traditional Vietnamese remedies that can cure chickens. The medicinal herbs are all familiar ones such as yellow flower tea which has the effect of increasing resistance, anti-bacterial, cooling; perilla which has the effect of preventing flu and respiratory viruses, asthma; sâm cau which has the effect of increasing resistance; lemongrass which supports and stimulates the digestive system, prevents bloating, reduces phlegm...

"To increase the resistance of chickens, every day I personally boil water from medicinal herbs to make medicine for the chickens to drink. Accordingly, I often use medicinal herbs containing natural antibiotics such as wild chili, rice balls, yellow flower tea, ginseng, bugs... According to calculations, every 1,000 chickens need to drink about 40-50 liters of herbal water/day" - Mr. Hung said.

According to Mr. Hung, while industrial chickens only need to be raised for about 3 months and 10 days before they can be sold, medicinal chickens need to be raised for 6-7 months before they can be sold.

Besides, the price of medicinal chicken is also higher than that of conventional chicken, with a stable selling price of about 140,000 VND/kg of hen and 160,000 VND/kg of castrated chicken.

"Just by not having to give medicine to the chickens, my family has saved quite a bit of money. What's more fun is that raising medicinal chickens doesn't require worrying about output, the chickens don't have to be brought to the market like other industrial chicken breeds," Mr. Hung said excitedly.

Currently, Mr. Hung's family's medicinal chicken farming model is developing well with a flock size of about 6,000 birds, and a total barn area of 2,500m².

Every year, his family earns about 200 - 300 million VND from raising medicinal chickens. To increase the value of medicinal chickens, Mr. Hung also cooperated with local households to establish a medicinal chicken raising cooperative in Tan Tien village.

Mr. Hung expressed his desire to be supported in accessing preferential loans to expand his scale. Although his family's medicinal chicken products are very popular, the customers are mainly regulars.

Therefore, he hopes that local authorities, departments and organizations will support the promotion of medicinal chicken products as well as support product output.

Mr. Trieu Van Dung - Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Ba Che district, Quang Ninh province said that Mr. Hoang Van Hung is one of the typical farming households in Don Dac commune.

To support Mr. Hoang Van Hung in developing his economic model, the Farmers' Association of Ba Che district has created conditions for Mr. Hung to access loans through the Farmers' Support Fund, and facilitate his participation in training sessions and technology transfer...

During that process, Mr. Hoang Van Hung used the loan effectively, developed a successful model, and improved his family's life.
