One weekend morning at Thanh Phu 2 Primary School, Thanh Phu Commune, Cai Nuoc District, right after the drum sounded to signal recess, the students quickly went to the library. Small groups were engrossed in comic books and children's science books. The school space in the rural school suddenly became bustling with the clear voices and bright eyes of the children in the joy of reading.
Vo Ngoc Han, a 5th grade student, innocently shared: "I really like going to the library because there are many good comics here. I hope the library has more new books so that my friends and I can read more."
Mr. Nguyen Kim Phu, teacher in charge of the library at Thanh Phu 2 Primary School, shared: "Due to the large number of students, the school organizes for each class to take turns going to the library to read books during each class session. In addition, students can also borrow books to read at home. Reading books not only helps them expand their knowledge but is also a journey to nurture their souls. Many students who were previously shy and quiet, after participating in book storytelling activities, have become more confident, and their presentation skills have also improved significantly." Mr. Phu also said that the number of books is currently limited and needs to be supplemented regularly to maintain students' interest.
Mr. Phan Van Vinh, Vice Principal of the school, said that the Thanh Phu 2 Primary School library has met level 2 standards since 2023. Thanks to support from socialization programs, the library has been increasingly supplemented with a variety of books, better meeting the reading needs of students. Previously, the library had invested in 4 sets of computers, but these devices are currently temporarily used for teaching because the computer system in the computer room is damaged.
Not only Thanh Phu 2 Primary School, many primary schools in Cai Nuoc district are also receiving support from the community through models such as "Friendly Bookshelf", "Green Library", or organizing open reading spaces, ideal destinations for students after each official school hour.
Hoa My 2 Primary School, Hoa My Commune, has just received funding from Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper and other donors with a total cost of 100 million VND. This support includes: repairing the library, installing air conditioners, adding 450 children's books, repairing 3 bookshelves, investing in 6 computers and awarding 20 scholarships (each worth 1 million VND with backpacks) to students in difficult circumstances.
Students of Hoa My 2 Primary School, Hoa My Commune, were excited when the school library was recently repaired and many new books were added.
Mr. Tran Minh Kha, Principal of the school, emotionally shared: "We would like to express our sincere thanks to the newspaper and the sponsors for their timely support to the school. This is not only material support but also a great source of spiritual encouragement, adding motivation for us teachers and students to constantly strive to innovate, create, and bring a better learning environment for the students."
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Tri, Deputy Head of the Departmentof Education and Training of Cai Nuoc district, the district currently has 20 primary schools, of which only 3 schools do not have standard libraries. In the 2019-2021 period, the "Room To Read" project sponsored the construction of 14 friendly libraries; the remaining number continued to be invested in the same model. In Thanh Phu commune alone, all 3 primary schools have standard libraries.
Despite many commendable efforts, the reality is that many school libraries in Cai Nuoc district still need to invest in more books, equipment and reading space. The district education sector is actively promoting the socialization of school libraries, with the desire to build friendly reading spaces, bringing knowledge closer to students.
Closing each reading session are the sparkling eyes and radiant faces of the young students, this is the most vivid proof of the effectiveness of library socialization work, not only bringing valuable bookshelves but also contributing to extending dreams, bringing children closer to the vast and colorful world of knowledge./.
