Raising super-productive children, 9X earns nearly 200 million VND/month

"If others can do it, I can do it too"

At the end of 2018, while working as a sales staff with a salary of more than 10 million VND/month, Mr. Nguyen Phu Vinh (32 years old, living in Vinh Long city, Vinh Long province) suddenly quit his job because... he was bored.

At that time, Vinh thought that working for a salary could not maximize his abilities. He wanted to try starting a business right in his hometown with products that were typical of the West.

At that time, black apple snail farming was just blooming in many provinces in the Mekong Delta. The easy-to-raise, easy-to-reproduce animals helped many people become rich. Thinking "others can do it, I can do it too", Vinh registered for a business administration course to begin his entrepreneurial journey.

"There are not many black apple snails left in the wild, but the market demand is quite large, from cheap pubs to restaurants, all are potential customers. At that time, there were few snail farms in Vinh Long, I knew this was a golden opportunity so I quickly seized it," the 9X Vinh Long shared.

In 2019, Vinh and his friend invested capital to start raising black apple snails on a pond area of ​​about 2,000m2, with a density of 150 snails/m2. Due to lack of experience, the snails died in large numbers after a short time, causing the young man to lose hundreds of millions of dong.

"If you fail somewhere, you have to stand up there, if you make a mistake, you have to fix it. After researching, I found out that before releasing the snails, I did not properly treat the pond, which prevented them from growing," Vinh said.

After consulting many successful snail farming models, the young man began to renovate the snail pond with water lilies and duckweed similar to a natural pond. The process of cleaning the pond also did not use chemicals to keep the snails clean and the water source safe.

"Aquatic plants in the pond help regulate the water source to keep it clean. In particular, the layer of duckweed on the lake surface acts as a cover for the pond, limiting the amount of rainwater that falls directly. Thanks to that, the pH in the water is stable, helping snails grow well and not be shocked when it rains a lot," said Vinh.

As for food, the farm owner feeds black apple snails natural foods such as fruits or vegetables.

Selling snail eggs also makes a lot of money

It takes about 4.5 months for snails to be raised and harvested for commercial sale, weighing 30-35 snails/kg; and about 5-5.5 months for snails to reproduce. It takes 13 to 17 days for snail eggs to hatch, and another 14 days to raise the snails, before they can be sold.

After 4 years of pursuing the "super-fertile" species, Mr. Vinh has expanded his snail farm to 6,000 square meters, specializing in providing egg-laying parent snails to the market.

"Currently, I sell snail eggs for 500,000 VND/kg; snail seeds (under 10,000/kg) cost 250 VND/snail. Every month, I earn 120-170 million VND from selling eggs and snail seeds," the snail farm owner revealed.

Not only enriching himself, 9X Vinh Long also shares experiences, transfers snail farming techniques, sells snail seeds and contracts commercial snails for farmers. Up to now, this young man has cooperated with about 200 people to produce and supply commercial snails, eggs and seeds to the market.

Mr. Vinh develops online sales channels for his products through social networks. In the near future, he will expand to selling on Tiktok and other platforms for easy access to consumers.

In addition, from September 2022, Mr. Vinh will deploy a model of hanging snails from black apple snails and lac snails. Each month, he supplies 1 ton of hanging snails, priced at 250,000 VND/kg.

"This item is easy to transport and preserve. My kitchen snails have been supplied to many provinces and cities nationwide. In the near future, I will diversify my snail products such as frozen snails," said Vinh.

Sharing the secret to starting a business, the snail farm owner said that to raise snails effectively, in addition to quality breeds, cleaning the pond and water source will account for 70% of success.

"The path to entrepreneurship is never easy. I have failed and been discouraged, but I have never given up. If you are determined, persistent and confident in your choice, the sweet fruit will come," Vinh said.
