Taking advantage of the water surface of the Trung Xuan hydroelectric power plant reservoir, many households have invested in cage fish farming.

Recognizing the potential and advantages for developing cage fish farming on the Trung Xuan hydroelectric reservoir, in 2020, Mr. Pham Ba Luyen's family in Phun village invested in building two cages to raise various fish species such as grass carp, black carp, catfish, and tilapia. He participated in fish farming technical training courses organized by the commune, and also proactively sought out additional knowledge through books, newspapers, and the internet.

"Thanks to clean water, high oxygen content, and the application of proper techniques, the fish grow quickly and are less prone to disease. After 8 months, my family was able to harvest them, selling them at prices ranging from 100,000 to 120,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, we earn nearly 40 million VND in profit each year," Mr. Luyen said.

Mr. Ha Van Nghi, Chairman of the People's Committee of Trung Xuan commune, said: "With the goal of developing cage fish farming in an efficient and sustainable manner, the commune has established the Trung Xuan Cage Fish Farming Cooperative. This helps members connect and support each other from the selection of fish breeds to care techniques and product consumption. To support people with investment capital, the commune has vouched for loans from the District Branch of the Social Policy Bank for households to invest in cage fish farming. In addition, the Department of Agriculture and Environment and the District Agricultural Services Center have organized training courses to transfer scientific and technical advancements to the people."

To date, 80 households in the commune have participated, with 90 fish cages. Each cage has an average area of 30-50 . In addition, readily available local food sources such as grass and banana leaves have been utilized, saving costs. The annual output of marketable fish for sale reaches 15 tons, with estimated revenue of 1.5 billion VND.

Besides grass carp, common carp, and tilapia, some households also raise catfish and snakehead fish, contributing to product diversification and improved economic efficiency.

To develop sustainable cage fish farming, in addition to focusing on disseminating information and guiding people to improve their knowledge and understand the care process; encouraging households to invest in applying scientific and technical advancements; and integrating some national target programs to support people with fish fry and cages, Trung Xuan commune also focuses on planning farming areas to ensure environmental hygiene.

“In the coming time, Trung Xuan commune will continue to encourage the people to develop aquaculture in the direction of commodity production, aiming for fish products according to VietGAP standards; prioritizing support from national target programs for sustainable poverty reduction and rural development funds, so that people have capital to invest in cage fish farming,” said Ha Van Nghi, Chairman of the People's Committee of Trung Xuan commune.
