In order to build a model for raising new species and intercropping valuable brackish and saltwater fish species on abandoned aquaculture ponds, the Quang Tri Agricultural Extension Center has built a model for raising whale fish in tarpaulin-lined ponds in the coastal area of Trieu Van commune, Trieu Phong district.

The model is implemented on a scale of 3,000 m2 , with a stocking density of 35 fish/ m2 . To implement the model, the Agricultural Extension Center supports 50% of the cost of seeds, industrial feed and biological products. Technical staff always closely monitor and guide households to implement the model according to the program's requirements.

After 3 months of raising, the average weight reached 20 fish/kg, the survival rate was estimated at 60%. Currently, whales are purchased at a price of about 170,000 VND/kg (20 fish/kg). With the estimated yield and investment costs during the raising period, the model household earned a profit of 167 million VND/0.3 ha after 3 months of raising, calculating the profit for 1 ha is over 550 million VND.

The effectiveness of the model has confirmed that whale is a suitable species that can be raised in tarpaulin-lined ponds instead of shrimp or can be rotated and intercropped between farming seasons. Thereby contributing to diversifying brackish water farming species in ineffective coastal shrimp farming areas, taking advantage of abandoned pond surface areas, limiting environmental degradation and disease, ensuring sustainability in aquaculture.
